The Big New Bridge by Hoover Dam
Last Memorial Day (2012) Baja Angel and I visited with her mom in Henderson, NV. One day there, we took a drive out to see the completed bridge. Last
time we were at Hoover Dam was in 2008...
and before then, Nov., 2007:
So, it was cool to see and drive over the finished product. Unless you are in a bus or other tall vehicle, you cannot see anything but the tall
concrete sides and the sky when driving over. A special parking place and a walk on the bridge is on the Nevada side, and well signed before dropping
down to Hoover Dam.
Hi Baja Nomad!
A long way down (880 feet)!
The Arizona end is blocked off... You cannot walk into Arizona on this bridge.

classic stuff!

DUMB PARENTING I witnessed at the Hoover Dam
In 2001, I was resting outside of a tourist store at the Hoover Dam and observed a man with his daughter on his shoulders.
He sat down on the Hoover Dam guard rail with his daughter atop his shoulders! Maybe 1 minute later, one of the guards directing traffic shouted for
him to MOVE AWAY FROM THE GUARDRAIL!
The man was visibly embarrased as he yelled back at the guard, and placed his daughter (maybe 4 or 5 yrs old) on the ground, and they walked away.

You obviously never crossed the old bridge
The "old bridge" was the top of the dam.
Very very narrow two lane road
With gawkers and rubberneckers and yokels picking up the strolling family.
Not a pretty mess to get entangle with.
On NASCAR weekend the line could back up a couple miles each direction.
And it was a very long way down to Laughlin to make an alternate crossing, or north to the Page Canyon bridge.

Another engineering marvel. Stoked to see they named part of it after Pat Tillman. I drove over it last year but didn't get a chance to take

Would be a great terrorist target, if they could pull it off. We'd be screwed out of water (to say the least) if that thing collapsed. I hope there
are some anti-aircraft batteries located nearby. Just saying......but...
I think it was just time to keep traffic flowing 75mph instead of taking those curves at 10mph.

Right, there was no old bridge... just the top of the dam... and tourist traffic made it slow going. After 9-11, no trucks over the dam and that
caused quite a problem getting to and from Las Vegas for those trucks going from or to Arizona. Cars are subject to search before crossing the dam.
The bridge is fast and easy for all now.

"Page Canyon Bridge"????? Well, I know what you mean, but i think that is the Glen Canyon Bridge just downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, and your
right, a very long way from Las Vegas. This new bridge really was needed, and is spectacular!!!

I think the town is Page, if my creaky memory is right.

Las Vegas (35 miles), Kingman (67 miles), and Boulder City (8 miles), are a lot closer than Page (306 miles).....

We were there last year while riding our new Seadoo but did not get on the bridge itself but viewed it from below on the Colorado River. Very nice
structure that we saw built over time with trips each summer. Lots of Big Horn sheep too, this one not very shy.
We launched at CottonWood Cove on Lake Mohave and rode 50 miles north on the River to see the Dam and Bridge. Beautiful ride, we had smooth water the
whole way.
Very nice photos David, we're going to see the Freedom Bridge this summer as we'll be in the area again.

I've watched the construction of the bridge from the water just like BajaWarrior.
For many years, at the end of September, a group of us will boat camp on Lake Mojave's sandy beaches! We always include a cruise up the river through
Black Canyon to Hoover Dam.

I agree that Vegas and Boulder City are closer than Page,
but not real easy cross the Colorado at either of those cities...

Thanks for sharing David, great shots.
We'll have to see it for ourselves this Summer as we just purchased a Vacation home (Beach House is still a keeper) in North Parker/South Lake Havasu
and are not too far from the Freedom Bridge. Good activity on a windy day when we're not on the water.
