Baja California cultural pioneer honored

From The San Diego Union Tribune

By Sandra Dibble

"Rubén Vizcaíno Valencia (1919-2004) was a writer, poet and cultural pioneer in Baja California who was instrumental in the creation of key institutions such as the Tijuana Cultural Center (Cecut) and the School of Humanities at the Autonomous University of Baja California. Artists, musicians, historians and dancers are honoring his legacy this month through a series of events.

On Tuesday at 6 p.m., a round-table discussion entitled "Professor Rubén Vizcaíno and the Cultural Movement in Baja California, starting in 1950," will be held at the Baja California Cultural Institute (ICBC) in Tijuana's Río Zone. On Saturday at 6 p.m. "A danzón for Vizcaino" features a performance by students of the stately tropical dance at the Cecut.

Other notable border-related events in the Tijuana-San Diego region from Sunday, Sept. 9 through Saturday, Sept. 15 include:

Sunday through Wednesday: The Greater San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce leads the "Sixth Annual One Region One Voice" mission to Washington, D.C. with participation of leaders from both sides of the border. On the agenda: Demanding funds for completion of the expanded San Ysidro Border Crossing.

Thursday: A binational conversation with San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Tijuana Mayor Carlos Bustamante in Tijuana at the Cecut's El Cubo Gallery. Moderated by Institute of the Americas president Charles Shapiro. From 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free and open to the public, but organizers request that those interested in attending register through this link.

Thursday: A chef and a historian discuss the banquet offered by Gen. Augustín de Iturbide on the occasion of Mexico's independence from Spain in Sept. 1821. Presentation by Yuri de Gortari and Dr. Edmundo Escamilla at the Cecut. 7 p.m. Free.

Saturday (Sept. 15): The Proyecto Fronterizo de Educación Ambiental is coordinating "Salvemos la Playa," an effort to remove litter from Baja California beaches and the Alamar River. More than 3,000 volunteers and 60 groups are expected to participate in the event at some 20 sites in Tijuana, Tecate, Rosarito Beach and Ensenada. The effort is held in conjunction with I Love a Clean San Diego. Starts at 8 a.m."
