No, it is for Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Australia, it was an 8.0 in the Solomon Islands. I just told my son via Skype to head towards higher ground, he is in Sydney.

There are tons of low lying islands in the area. Hopefully everyone is OK and there is no tsunami.

Just read this on the event:

SYDNEY (AP) — A tsunami alert has been issued for several South Pacific islands after a strong earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands.

It wasn't yet known if a tsunami was generated. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says it issued a warning based on an evaluation of the earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 8.0-magnitude quake struck Wednesday 50 miles west of Lata, in the Solomon Islands, at a depth of 3.6 miles.

Josephine Mae, a police official in the Solomon's capital city of Honiara, said she had not felt any shaking.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the tsunami warning is in effect for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna. A tsunami watch is in effect for American Samoa, Australia, New Zealand and eastern Indonesia.

Lots of Cortez sailing visitors are in that area now. Good luck to all, afloat and ashore.

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

I click on the link 2 posts above several times a day, and have been noticing all these 4.6 to 6.3 quakes in that region over the last few days. Even did a search on Lata island just yesterday with a Google earth Flyaround. Was wondering if they were foreshocks.

Perhaps the 8.0 was a foreshock.

Just yesterday I noted a bunch of small 2.5 quakes equidistant from Baja to Northern California.

Insert maniacal laughter here.

Lata Island Quakes

There has been 31 aftershocks of 4.8 or bigger since the 8.0

Three miles deep is extremely shallow. If that fault is a slip strike there is less danger than a subduction event. But the real danger in tsunamiland is a quake causing a massive underwater landslide on a steep slope. The Japanese have an amazing (expensive) array of hundreds of buoys that can radio via satellite instantly the presence of a mid-ocean quake caused ripple. I cannot imagine a sizable tsunami event going unannounced to geologists and governments.
