Oceanside Cottage featured in 'Top Gun'

Passing into movie trivia history? Maybe not..

The other day my local Oceanside, Ca. guide pointed out the small cottage that was shown in the 1986 hit movie about Fightertown, USA, 'Top Gun'. It's located near the waterfront and close to the Oceanside Pier.

Built around 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves, it was a beach rental for decades until the city bought it in 2005 and declared it a historic site.

In 2008, Oceanside approved the construction of a beach resort on the block, and voted to preserve and move the Top Gun house. For now, the house will stay where it is until it's eventually moved 2 blocks north on North Pacific and incorporated into the resort and used as perhaps a coffee house or gift shop...maybe.

Looks a bit different today than shown in the movie, but a few years have passed and time appears to have taken a toll on the cottage's structural condition. The house is now fenced off and looking pretty grim & delapitated. (Which reminds me of an overdue job coming this summer sprucing up a certain lake cabin...dang.)

Hey, hang in there, old cottage! Maybe there's a sequel waiting in the wings?

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Can't wait to see how they incorporate it with the new project. I drive by this house on my way to the beach and it's definitely started falling apart over the last 5 years. As an Oceanside resident, I consider it a landmark and hope to see it restored soon. I need to watch that Top Gun movie again....

I had a beach condo down the street from the Pier when they demolished the entire area around the Top Gun house. They even pulled down the skate park that was their for the kids. However, they did keep the old house and they talked about moving it or doing something around it. They did rebuild the area in front of the Pier with a new timeshare/hotel project and added a new restaurant at the street level. I have since stayed at the hotel and it is very nice and very close to downtown.

We bought our condo at North Coast Village in 2001 for next to nothing and sold it in 2006, at the peak, and made a killing. It is the only time in my life that I looked like a financial genius! The unit we bought and sold just sold about a year ago for about $400K less than we sold it for, but the guy who bought it was a jerk and tried to pull some fast stuff when we were selling it, so I guess karma is a reality!!

ah...brings back memories. We moved from LA to Oceanside in '67. Graduated OHS and had the ceremony at the amphitheater next to the pier. It's grown at bit since then.

Hey, I am IN Oceanside, and he hasn't called me either, lol... In fact, I drove by Guajome Park (a popular Pompano site) today to do an irrigation repair, but I didn't know he was in town. Hey Roger, call me!

I drove by the Top Gun cottage today and took these photos. It won't be long until it's moved off that lot as there is a whole lot of construction going on all around it... The house is in pretty bad shape.
