Long Lines in San Ysidro to Exchange Money : Peso Sinks to 306 to the Dollar
SAN YSIDRO — Mexicans and Americans alike queued up at currency exchange houses in this border community Wednesday seeking the best price for their
pesos, which were trading at all-time lows despite no official word of a devaluation by the Mexican government.
Mexican banks were selling U.S. dollars only to account holders, forcing other Mexican citizens to buy dollars from a strip of about two dozen
exchange houses in the San Diego protectorate of San Ysidro, about 20 miles south of downtown San Diego.

300 pesos old pesos today is "worthless" but if it were possible, THREE THOUSAND PESOS eventually became worth one dollar, then the 3,000 pesos became
3 new pesos.
Wanna guess at how much a dollar's worth of pesos THEN coverts to (math only) centavos, today?

I remember losing my wallet in the winter of 87-88.
It had a quarter of a MILLION pesos in it.
Still didn't ruin my vacation...
About $110.

I kept this $100,000 peso note and I can exchange it at Bank of Mexico today for a $100 peso note with a value of around US$8.

Maybe not. I remember when the money changed. There was a countdown to the day and after that, the old Pesos couldn't be spent, changed or anything.
100,000?? How many zeros do you see on that bill anyway?

Yep, you're right. It's only 10,000 and can be exchanged at Bank of Mexico for 10 pesos = 80 cents.

"In December 1994, when Ernesto Zedillo took office, he discovered that the guy who passed the presidency to him had taken off to Ireland with half of
our country's money. Zedillo, who holds a doctorate in economics from Yale, decided (in collusion with his predecessor, who holds a doctorate in
economics from Harvard) to hide this devaluation by demonetizing our currency when he took office. As of 1 January 1996, only the Banco de Mexico has
accepted pre-Zedillo pesos, and at one one-thousandth of their face value."
