Street Gourmet LA today... in Ensenada

Bill Esparza - Street Gourmet LA - today posted some great pics on FB & Instagram of seafood from street carts today in Ensenada. Bill's a big Baja fan.

First, from La Guerrerense:

"Living the dream. Pismo clams with sea snail and pen shell clams"

Then, he notes a new cart in Ensenada.... with these two photos...

Sea urchin and geoduck:

Sea urchin, with yellowtail, olive oil, and yellow mustard:

Says he'll be identifying the cart later in his OC Weekly blog "Tijuana Sí!" at:

Mariscos El Pizón is the place.

"For the last decade, El Pizón has been a locals only spot"

"Customers come 2 or 3 at a time, and all seem to be regulars."

"his short menu of provocative sea urchin plates are sinfully delicious and original, but you can get sea cucumber, pismo clam, oysters, and sea snail, too."

"El Pizón is required eating in Ensenada--it's instantly part of the region's seafood hegemony of exquisite products interpreted by superior technique and sophistication"

"Mariscos El Pizón is located on the northwest corner Av. Dr. Pedro Loyola at Guaymas, 10a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday except Wednesday, 011-52-1-646-148-7961"

I went to El Guerrerense on the suggestion of someone on this board. There is no place to sit down and it was like an auction vying for your food...it was good but I'd rather go to a sit down place still moderately priced like Mariscos Bahia Ensenada. No hot sun and someplace to sit and place your food down when you eat. Try the lobster machaca for breakfast, fried garlic fish plate, and the ceviche is great too. Mahi Mahi is good too, but expensive and the service is bad, despite a dozen waiters standing around.

It would be a rare thing to see me sitting down to eat during daylight hours in Baja. If I don't get to try 3 or 4 different spots I feel deprived. The longer the line the more likely I will enjoy. I like to take newbies along on our 'sport eating' adventures. It's always fun to see reactions. Can't wait to try El Pizon soon. Different strokes. :dudette:

Sounds like it is.

Udo...are you still in town? That Baja Almanac is still sitting where I put it for you last year. C'mon by if you can.

Since the remodel on the interior a few years back, the few times I've been there the prices have been up, and the service level down. It's too bad - the menu is extensive, and the food is okay to good.

Mariscos Playa Azul next door doesn't have the nicer "decor" of their neighbor, and the menu isn't as extensive - but the place still seems to be a great value, with good service.

We were down in Ensenada in June and came through town at about 3:00 p.m. on a Friday. Went to La Guerrerense and oddly it was not mobbed. There were only a handful of patrons and we actually were able to park right next to the stand. The reason was that they were out of the fish and shrimp ceviches. What they did have, however, was some incredible octopus c-cktail. I'll sit on a dusty curb in the hot sun for that stuff any day of the week.

If you're referring to the first picture (from La Guerrerense), they're known for their salsas made from scratch - using chiles, vegetables, nuts, etc.

If you like shellfish/seafood try Mulle Tres on the waterfront, behind the fish market.
