Fishing Advice - Punta Finale, Gonzaga Bay

I am going fishing in the Gonzaga Bay area in October. Got lot's of great advice from a prior post on tides/moon phase. I have not fished Punta Finale yet, and was hoping for some hints. Thanks in advance! Brad

Fishing by boat (15 ft aluminum, 15 HP Johnson). I have heard good things about the crocks, but never used one. Cast out, and let them flutter to the bottom? I have trolled with surface, medium and deep lures (Rapala...), and bottom fished with cut bait. All have worked well. I have caught Corvina, Sierra, Cabrilla and a variety of other fish, but would like to get Mahi if they are around.

Miro lures, slow trolled around structure for grouper and bass.
Crocks are a go to all over Baja.
DoDo's use trolled jetheads, dark when its dark, bright when it's light. when you hang one get another line in the water they are never alone.

If the mahi are feeding on top of the water pitching a croc like the one mentioned above works great for me. I use the same color for yellowtail. good luck to you!!

Rebel fastracs slowly trolled tight to shore are deadly...almost too much so! You can remove the middle hook (and even the first one) and have leave less carnage to the fish (and your fingers) if/when you release it. Feathers work great for dorado but that is getting late to be targeting them in Gonzaga...though they could be around the odds are against it as it is usually time for them to head south...large sierra and yellowtail will hit the feathers as well. If you are launching at Final and can head south the fishing might be a bit better if you can get away from the gill netters of Gonazaga...plus it is just so damn beautiful and isolated...just be aware you'll normally be coming back against the afternoon winds...we have a 12 footer and I am always keenly aware of the horizon and try to remember the occasional place to beach it necessary!

This tool is the find of the century for anglers.... for just what RH_Town said.
Hooking yourself....

(copy and paste the entire link)
If the link does not work, search in Amazon... TEKTON 3386 8-Inch Heavy-Duty Mini Bolt and Wire Cutter

I bought one and am impressed by the build quality.
Nice finish, thick steel and a good handle. If you can keep the cancer away,
I am sure they would last a lifetime.
Cheap enough at under $8 bucks and FREE shipping and a lifetime guarantee.(probably does not cover corrosion)
If you fish alone as I often do, the one handed size is perfect.
Keep in mind these small cutters are not for thick bolts, rebar or thick shackle padlocks.
3/16" jaws is fine for hooks, wire and small screws and bolts.

A buddy of mine cut a Rebel Fastrac treble hook out of my hand once not to long ago....he cut it too short and not enough shank was left sticking out to grab a hold of.
The cut shank end sunk under my skin and could not be grabbed by even needle nosed pliers.

After 2 trips to 2 different Loreto doctors, one finally managed to cut it out. But not after slicing the meat between the index finger and thumb nearly to the bone.
An infection later and being nearly "handless" for quite a while, I vowed to get some cutters for just this such incident.

Hopefully I will never have to put them to use, but to me, they are an invaluable tool to have in the tackle box or console of your boat.

I pull fish hooks all the time and you are usually asking for trouble if you cut the hook off. It is better to keep a line, wrap it around, put backward pressure, and ease the hook out. Here is a video from You tube.

I hope that guy gets paid the big bucks to impale himself with 4/0's.

Did you hear him say most doctors push the hook though?

Even with a helper, the line/yank method looks the least viable to me.
Being alone would surely make it tougher, more painful and more tissue damage if you could even line it up right.
As with many things....it sounds easier than it looks. You saw the guy yank a few times and remain unsuccessful...I will pass.

I hope I never have to do it again but I will stick to the push through/cut off method with my cheapie one handed cutters. No helper required.

Frankly I don't know why the man did that to himself. He could have just as easily bought meat at the supermarket for this demonstration.

Somehow I got the reputation for being able to remove fish hooks and have removed 12 so far this year on the water. It is easy once you learn the system and it is surprising how well that system works.
I had to go to the doctor, have anasthesia, and have one pushed through. Never again. That was when I learned how to get them out the easy way. Good luck with your system.

Im pretty sure the drift net is the most successfully used piece of fishing tackle at Gonzaga Bay now the the new road has gotten there.

Gonzaga Bay will soon enough have the same "fishing" as San Felipe unless the politicians and government step in and realize that short term gill netting harvesting of the sea and the decline of sport fishing and the associated dollars is not a viable option...

hahahahahahahahahahaha

Ain't I the funny one?

That is the crying shame. Last year there was an armada of gill netters. Hopefully something will happen. They fenced off the area of the old fish camp, but I think they will just move to the south of Rancho Grande.

The dead sea is coming.
