Up Bishop Creek
We just wanted to check out the beginning of autumn in the high country. The season of color is beginning and should be in full bloom in a couple of
weeks. Great time to be here!
Different plants with different ways of announcing autumn
And some critter thought he just might improve on nature by sculpting a new design. I liked his work, especially the face he created.

Nice photos...again, Diana.
Your fall colors are ahead of us. We were up in the high country of NE Nevada (east of Jackpot along the old California Emigrant Trail) yesterday and
failed to see any harbinger of fall, unless you consider that we could see for miles and miles and...miles. After a summer of smoke it was gratifying
to breath clean, fresh air again.

So glad the smoke is going away! We were on part of the Old
Emigrant Trail last week in NW Nevada --- all quite interesting.

thanks! Was up Big Pine North Fork last week, but missed the color of your pics. Learned a few old lessons about rain on down and not underestimating
10k when weather blows in.

Thanks --- one tends to forget how fast the weather up there can change and what it can do! Taking a break from other things and watching those
clouds float across the mountains up the Big Pine.
We just hope we don't get a hard freeze or major storm or it will mess up all the color for the next several weeks!

At what elevation were the photos taken? We're considering a trip up to see the color this year, and are trying to gauge where we should spend our
time - up high or down lower in the valley.

Right now you are looking at around 8 and 9000 feet for the color, BUT it is changing every day and it does seem to be coming earlier that usual.
Don't delay. One big storm or freeze and it will be all over with before it really gets going. It happened to us one year when they had one of the
shortest seasons ever.
Keep a watch on this link. California Fall Color
Tis beautiful-- we don't go out much on the weekends, but hope to check out the Virginia Lakes/Green Creek area the first of the week.
And to all planning on coming up, do be very careful on the highway as many animals are on the move. Coming around a curve near Lee Vining, we had a
mishap with a coyote which made us feel just awful. It was a choice of the coyote or swerving into traffic. It is just a terrible feeling. 
And the man at the body shop said that very recently he has had damaged vehicles from deer and is working on one from a bear crossing the highway.

On our 5pm TV news, they forecast snow in the Mammoth area tonight. It was 49 f. in Truckee at 4pm.

Ken,
Yes there seems to be cold front heading to this area --- I have not checked the Mammoth report yet. But even here, we had a much cooler wind than
usual.
This evening as we watched the clouds over the mountains, they were not the typical summer clouds, but more like a real storm, so we headed up Big
Pine Creek to see if the storm was slopping over the mountains.
JohnMcFrog said that last week there was not real color in the back country at even higher elevation. Well, the the color is starting to change now
at the end of the road! It is happening fast and it was storming in the high country and some on this side.
Watching the news from Reno and yes, there was a bit of snow on Donner pass and snow predicted for the west side down to 6000 feet . Weather channel
says it is snowing now in Mammoth! Yikes and it isn't even autumn!
Everyone is hoping for more snow this year, but I sure hope this early stuff does not mess up the season of color!

great pictures.. wish I could figure out how to get some posted
we were 36 degrees in the Colorado sangre de cristo mts this morning and are expecting snow tomorrow above timberline.
must be time to get headed south...

Autumn color sprinkled with snow can be the best of both worlds. Those closeups of bristlecone wood is really special with snow on them. There can be
great compositions with that combination.
BTW, the beaver pond I posted was on Green Creek.
Conway summit will soon turn gold but I've never shot a good picture up there. A good telephoto lens would have helped.
I don't believe this last storm is the start of winter. It will melt and we should see warmer days ahead with cold nights for a month longer. Some of
the best days are still to come.

Yes, it is predicted to warm up and I hope you are correct about the best days to come. The change is just so great to watch and quite renewing.
On our way north, Conway summit was beginning and when we returned 4 days later, there was more. We, hopefully will see it on Monday. And thanks
for the ideas!
