New Product From Spot

Looks like a good anti-theft device for boat, aircraft, etc. owners.

Thanks for sharing Information
Looks like a good option for notifying people of emergencies also, on land and water. Sort of a small EPIRB.
thank you for post. Good to know. I'll look for it at REI.

The original Spot Messenger serves the functions you list and more. I carry it with me on all trips.

This gadget looks like it is only designed to track where it is....as a theft locating gizmo.....and not like their other devices.
Don't believe everything you think....

We have used SPOT devices on many of our offroad adventures for tracking and safety. I will be using the DeLorme InReach next week when I head to
Baja for the first time. It includes satellite 2-way text messaging along with tracking and search n rescue functions. It mates with my cellphone. If
I were to buy one, I would buy the standalone DeLorme.
This SPOT tracker would be good for vehicles/boats left in Baja and you are in the states. Cool concept. My concern is with communication. For the
SPOT devices it needs clear line of sight to reach the satellites and you don't want to put an anti theft device where it is visible. Maybe they
stepped up the range.

Spot devices usually work.....but not always. Last year I organized a four-day off-road moto-ride in BC and a rider crashed hard. His partner found
him 15 minutes later and he needed CPR as he was blue (i.e. very close to dead). The CPR worked and 5 guys sent 911 Spot calls....none of them relayed
the co-ords and it took the rescue helicopter 4 hours to find us (a guy rode 2 hours away to nearest phone and called co-ords).
The medics were superb and dealt w/ punctured lung prior to airlifting him.....the guy took a number of months to recover from mostly head injury
sequelae.
Several of the Spot senders were in moderate tree cover area when they first did the 911....several others hiked up to a clearing above treeline and
their co-ords did not go through.
