What are the top 2-3 Baja books

Looking for something my 12 yo would enjoy also.

A prereq would be something I could get my hands on.

Heap of Bones, by Steve Sorensen. A Baja Surfer's Chronicle . The guy lives in Zacatitos and describes the surf breaks, as well as the people down here. Not sure where it is available but I meet him and many people he talks about. If you surf Baja I believe you will enjoy this read. I got the book at a local, art show in Zacks ..

God and Mr. Gomez by Jack Smith. Very, very funny book about the true adventure of a rookie having a house built in Baja.

You mention that this is a book for your 12-year old, but you don't designate whether you're looking for fiction or non-fiction.

In light of that I recommend the following: The Pearl by John Steinbeck and Kira's King of the Moon for the fiction and God and Mr. Gomez for non-fiction.

Allen R.

Any or all of Graham Mackintosh's books! Real life adventure and lots of historical content.
Journey of the Flame... for fiction, as it is based on real events in history. It is written in Old English style wording, so a bit difficult there.
Baja Legends is a good call... King of the Moon may be a tad too adult due to the love story in it?
A 12 year old may respond well to any Baja book after he/she visits the place and shows some excitement. The Geology book and the Lizard book are great.

I loved Erle Stanley Gardner's books... 'Off the Beaten Track in Baja' I got when I was about 11!

My book on the missions is also good stuff! ;)

Mike McMahan's There it is:Baja! (or the paperback edition: My Adventures in Baja) was one of my favorites.

Here are the covers:

Just some ideas...

The one book that captured my imagination for the Baja and inspired my first adventure south is "Trails and tales of Baja" by Pel Carter 1967. It's really timeless and a true adventure a kid would be fascinated by. I still remember the arduous journey they made from Ensanada to Santo Tomas! Something that takes us minuets today.

Here's one actually written for Jr. High readers... but the rest of us can enjoy it too... IF you can find a copy!!!

There's even a map of Baja inside...

Published in 1964, and with Jeeps and lost missions, a real winner!

That copy came to me from Dave and Juanita at Cielito Lindo, about 2002... It is a 1998 edition.

The Girl from the Sea of Cortez would be perfect for a 12-yr old.
Into a Desert Place is one of my top 10 books.

Please encourage your beautiful child to keep reading about his interests and if Baja is part of that, he will find a world of wonder.

That is all.
