PAPPY JON *Obtained* ASSISTANCE HWY. 5, MATOMI WASH
Baja Nomad member Pappy Jon from New Mexico had just started his long planned annual Baja trip when his transfer case/ driveshaft failed.
He is 1/2 mile up the Matomi wash from Hwy. 5 (near Km. 60).
This breakdown report was sent Friday evening about 7:30, and I saw it about 3 hours later. I emailed BajaRob in Bahia Santa Maria, but learned this
morning that he is not at home and cannot assist. I also posted on the South Campos Facebook page.
Here are the messages from Pappy Jon:
*Broke transfer case. I'm in Matomi wash south of San Felipe less than half mile off the road. Maybe input shaft or main shaft.
*85 4Runner with a 23 spline (turbo) input. Would like to drag truck someplace secure where it can be worked on more easily.
Can someone south of San Felipe find help for him?
His GPS location (WGS84): Lat 30.4897 Lon -114.674048
THANK YOU!
EDIT: Pappy Jon was rescued Sun. afternoon and is now OK!

He is in good shape, waiting for a tow or mechanical assistance...
Here is the last message, after I told him I put the word out:
Thanks David. Life is good. 83*, wind 6mph gusting 9mph. Baro 29.76". Fridge 37*. Battery on solar holding at 12.7V. But no damn beer!
Pacifico por favor.

Pappy Jon has a DeLorme 'In Reach' device (not a Spot device). It is superior in that it allows short message 2 way emailing (for a price).

He is a long way from home and in a flash flood wash, so until he can get pulled out to Puertecitos, Colonia Delicias, or San Felipe.

I've never been up there so I couldn't say.
Has to be a mechanic down there that would love to get in on that. |
Matomi Wash is 40 miles south of San Felipe, 15 miles south of Colonia Delicias, and 10 miles north of Puertecitos.
There is no town 'Ejido Matomi', just a sign where that black square is on the map. He is just south of the road to Campo Los Olivos and just north of
the Rancho San Rafael, on the map... and 1/2 mile west of the highway (see satellite image above).

That's only an hour tops out of San Felipe to the south---------it would be easy-peasey to drag him back to San Felipe with any decent size 4x4, I am
thinking--------nylon tow line would work fine.

If I was in the area and had the time I would. I help folks all the time. Ask me about the three days I spent helping another party off of El Cap.
Broken ankle from a fall. How about the guy at a remote point at the sisters. No tow strap, no tools, no clue. Read a report here and went for it.
I hope Pappy gets the help he needs.

I reached out to the Cheezer group in San Felipe to see if any of them could help or if they knew someone in the area that could help.

Here is a reply that just came in (after I asked him if he had 2WD at all):
Correct. It broke in 2wd. Not broken rear output, rear drive shaft is out. No front drive either. Must be input shaft. Need 23 spline tc.
Marlin sells gear.
Thank you for helping Pappy Jon!

Thanks Frank... heck of a way to start a Baja vacation! At least he has plenty of food.
By-the-way... he can be reached by 2 meter radio:
>I will have the 2-meter radio and will park on the simplex home frequency of 146.52MHz during the day. Call sign KJ5RAT. I'm not aware of
any repeater systems down there. Of course, you will need to be within 20 miles and have near line of sight.

This just in from Jon:
David, make sure people know I'm safe and very content. They don't need to rush, until we have parts lined up. Or we need to tear into it for
more info.

I think I would walk to the hwy ,hitch a ride to town ,find someone to tow me back to SF . Take it to a mechanic order part, they can get it on the
bus from mexicali buy the next day. Find a hotel and a cold beer. There are worse places to be broken down

Fantastic, I just sent a message to Jon.
Nomads are the best!
I have to tell you that being able send short messages back and forth sure has an advantage over SPOT!
