Border allowance
I crossed southbound at el chaparral this morning and stopped to declare a few items.
The customs allowance per person is now $300.00, since January 2014. That is up from $75.00 per person.
The agent suggested I stop and declare in the future even though I am under the allowance and he will radio the other guys so they won't pull me over
once I cross the border.
I asked if I could bring lumber and tires. His answer is yes in small amounts and the lumber and tires must be new with a receipt and you will pay 16%
tax.

I wish Mexico Customs would announce these changes. They seem to be content keeping it a secret so one never knows what to expect.
The details of the recent changes in immigration are a mystery even today.

So does this mean that the 16% tax is on the amount exceeding $300 on the tires and lumber?
Also, if I bring down some older furniture from my house to put in my Baja house, do I have to pay tax on it?

I just found this information on Aduana's website. In Spanish or English.
Sure enough, they raised the exemption limits.

The agent did not ask my Immigration status, so I say yes for tourists.
I had 1 mattress and 4 sheets of 4'x7' sheets of metal.

There is no allowance for lumber or tires. You pay the tax on the full value.
I did not ask about used furniture. I would bring 1 or 2 items and stop to declare. If you have 2 people in the car, you have a $600.00 allowance for
some used stuff.

"Persons that reside in the north border are allowed to import merchandise for up to $150.00 USD."

Not that Mex Customs Officers look at their site, one reg says 'passengers entering by land $300 plus their luggage',
and the above quote, which uses the word RESIDE in the
north border as $150 not $300, am I reading that correctly?
Any contradiction?

I got hassled a bit last week for bringing two 5 gallon gas cans filled with fuel. He let me bring them eventually, but said next time I need to fill
them in Mex.

before you bring wood and tires to the border...
i'd like to hear from someone who "recently" did it...and imported them
wood is importable but it requires a special fumigation paper...
the tires have always been a problem...that would be a new rule
I cant find anything new on tires
actually the cost of tires here in Baja aren't too much more then the north...
not worth the effort to cross them
