South Eastern Oregon

We recently took a quick trip to south east Oregon because we had not been there before. We were a bit rushed on time due to work we are having here, and we want to return. Also, while we loved the stormy weather, it limited some of our hikes because of the cameras, and a few errors in finding housing, rushed us a bit. But it is so beautiful, that we will return.

We did a big circle and visited the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge --- all really wonderful places.

Here are just a few pictures of what we saw If anyone is interested in seeing more of our pictures I hope that the links to SnugMug work. :-}

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

Malheur Wildlife Refuge

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Life is good and so many different places to see.

On edit, I moved the links to the top as a couple people said they did not see them. :-)

Beautiful photos of one of my favorite areas. One of my must stop spots is the Alvord Desert hot springs near Plush.

Thanks. I made a major internet mistake with Plush so we did not spend as much time there as we wanted --- we will return.

The night before we headed that direction, I googled hotels for Plush. I was using our tablet, so it was not full size print, but that is just my excuse for not looking closely.

Trip advisor came up with several hotels for Plush so I thought we could stay there. John said he did not believe that their could be a number of places to stay there as it looked like a very small place. He was correct. I failed to notice that the hotels mentioned were within 100 miles, and there is basically nothing in Plush.

We were rushed this trip, but we will be back.

Wow ! small world. my family was relocated to Malheur County after we were released from the camps after world war II and i grew up the from about age 3 until my early teens when we moved to los angeles. actually in Ontario, Oregon.

i don't remember all the places in your wonderful pictures as i guess we were too busy just running around the countryside, farms and along the snake river and hunting and fishing and just being kids. what a great life it was.

Thank you for bringing the memories back to me.

Nice photos of a lonely place on the continent, Diane. I've camped and fished trout in some of those wide open places..great fun.

Trying to avoid the boring interstates, eastern Oregon has long been one of our alternate 'routes' for us to get from Up North to Baja...much like the old Westward Ho pioneers undertaking the Oregon Trail. The eastern part of Oregon is where some of those pioneers would veer south from the main trail and head towards California. Other settlers kept going west towards the Oregon Coast areas near Astoria by way of the Columbia Gorge.

Hwy 95, 395, and some rambling prairie trails are a lot of fun exploring on our migratory path. On a couple of trips we spent some time visiting amigos around the Alturas, California area just across the line from Goose Lake in SE Oregon. Modoc country. Hah...I recall painting a certain garage as a favor....twice!

Here's a photo I took in 2005...of part of that old Oregon Trail heading down into SE Oregon (Just imagine those pioneers seeing a sign ..."Exit here for California"...what an adventure that must have been.)

We enjoy pulling into the diners and having lunch. Strangers yes, but we are always greeted warmly...well heck, it's pretty lonesome out there, y'know!

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Beautiful pics, Thanks for sharing!
I did a ride to the Alvord playa several yrs ago, Rode out on the playa after a rain storm and got stuck in the middle, and had to wait it out till it dried up. Note to self, "Don't go playin on the playa after it rains"

We have been doing more locally, but want to get on out there! Things like surgery, getting the house painted, and a call for jury duty are slowing us down! But we never tire of exploring around here.

We have traveled in Oregon quite a bit, but always on the west side. Now we have a lot more we want to see on the East side!

You are welcome. Isn't it strange how often when one lives in an area they don't do the tourist things.

A friend with whom we taught school in Calexico was raised in John Day. It is a nice small town and bigger than most around there!

We ate lunch in Spray and almost stayed at their tiny motel.

Love that picture --- and yes, great country. We also love pulling into small diners in the hinterlands. There is always good conversation and a great way to learn about an area.

Thanks! And boy, your experience does not sound like much fun! We met a man in Frenchglen who had brought his motocycle from Hawaii and was going to visit family in Colorado by going from hotspring to hotspring. He mentioned Alvord, but we did not make it there. This trip was made between ordering new windows for the house and getting them made and installed --- too rushed!

There is a mountain road out of Frenchglen that was still closed --- we have our sights on driving that one.

BTW--- we ran into some Birders in Burns near the Malheur Refuge and they said that in one day, they found 95 different species of birds in that area! I know we saw and heard a lot of small birds around there and they said it was a birder's paradise.

Linda, Bubba and Udo --- thank you. It is beautiful country and well worth more exploring and we will as it was such a quick trip. And John took part of these photos.

We didn't get to hike as much as we wanted because every time we got going, the rain would find us. We love that kind of weather, but the cameras do not!

We were planning on heading toward Joseph, Oregon after our house painters are finished, but jury duty calls. :-)

My apologies! I am new to using snugmug and today I realized that by each of my photos in the galleries there was a buy button! It is embarrassing as I NEVER intended or thought about this --- I finally figured out how to get rid of the buy button! :fire:
