Tragedy strikes Punta Chivato & Help requested for lost dog * Great news Bubba Dog Found
I'm saddened to report the following tragedy.

SAN QUINTÍN.- Two people died in a vehicle accident which happened at kilometer 154 on the Transpeninsular Highway, on the stretch between El Rosario
and Cataviña, during the Tuesday afternoon.
Ministerial sources reported that one of the vehicles involved burned up, leaving the driver burned. The accident was reported at 5PM by worried
drivers who witnessed the events.
The incident happened when a fisherman from colonia Nueva Era, Edwin René Acevedo Morales, 28 years old, who was driving his 1998 Astro van headed
southbound to work in the southern fishing zones.
It appears he lost control of his vehicle and entered the oncoming traffic lane and hit a grey Toyota Tundra pickup, driven by Jesse Truly Skates, 66
years old, and his companion Cherry Bowless Kates?? 78 years old, who were traveling southbound from the United States.
Immediately after the head-on crash, the van burned up, burning the body of the fisherman Edwin René. The driver of the pickup, Jesse Truly Skates,
also died a little later from the injuries suffered in the accident.
The American woman who was accompanying Skates was taken for medical attention by a rescue group to the IMSS 69 hospital in colonia Vicente Guerrero.
The Americans were travelling alone, and so as of the moment it is not possible to tell their version and where they were headed.
Their Black Lab Bubba ran from the accident and has yet to be found. He's a big, 110 pounds +/-, sweet heart wearing a blue collar. Very friendly.
There is a reward posted and the people in Catavina have been notified but I know there are a lot of Nomads that have helped in the past with rescuing
lost dogs out there and the family would like any help we can offer. Here is the request I just received:
Hi Russ, we've all been very saddened by the news of Jesse and Cheryl's accident.
Do you think Baja Nomad might help? But the other thing is their dog, Bubba. He was in the car with them and when a door was opened, he jumped out
and ran off. I'm sure he was scared.
We have made a 5000 peso reward available to anyone who can find him and keep him until a friend can come get him. He was very loved and is missed by
Cheryl and also Larry. Our phone number can be used (615-155-7315) in this article for a contact, and also our email. We have alerted the hotel at
Catavina about this situation. Maybe a rancher has seen him. He's such a big black dog that a stranger might be afraid of him, but he's very
friendly. Blue collar. He probably weighs about 100-120#, black short hair, tail has a white tip and so do the tips of his feet. Finding him would
be the answer to his owners prayers. All I can say is let's all try and make this recovery happen and ease some broken hearts.

Can a more accurate description of where the accident occurred be given? K154 is where? Close to Catavina? That would help people know exactly
where to look. My Black Lab would probably come to anyone offering food. Sad news, hope they find their Lab! Tio

Also, please note from original story the dog's name is 'BUBBA'. That'll help in calming the guy and getting him to favorably react.
Black labs are lovers (huh, Tio!) and should respond.

Is there anyway you can get a picture of the dog? If you can, Ron, BajaGringo will spread it around among his many friends. And also, it could be
spread through facebook as many of us have gringo and Mexican friends who live there???

Cheryl is at home right now in Long Beach, CA. There were two newspaper articles but one indicates that Jesse was traveling south, which is not
accurate. They stayed for the Punta Chivato Dorado Tournament and were headed back to California. This is a lab look alike and was a rescued Mexican
dog that Jesse and Cheryl found by the dump in Mulege and brought it home. They were very surprised that it grew so fast but it did have big feet. I
am sure we can find a picture.

Bubba was lost at Kilometer 154 which would put them 154 kilometers south of San Quintin. "0" is at the Federal Police tope where the Grulla or tow
trucks are located on the south side of San Quintin. Catavina is 182 Kilometers south, so 30 kilometers north of Catavina would be pretty close.

Knowing the name and the description given here is good, but there is nothing like a photo!

I put it on my facebook and hope it is okay that I put the phone number and the reward mentioned in the first post!
I also asked a friend in BA to correctly translate it for his facebook page as there are people from BA who travel back and forth to Encenada every
day. I also asked him to contact another friend in BA who is not on facebook, but he has family in Guayaquil and Cataviña.
I so hope this pup is found!

Bonnie Vessels If someone has the ability to reach the folks at the hotel there...one of Scoop's dear old friends from off road racing works there as
a night security guard. His name is "Perfecto"...last time I visited with him I dressed him in Scoop's race shirts, hat, & jacket. If someone can
get word to him that a friend of ours is in need of help I know he'd do everything possible.

! Bubba found and returned !
Ron and Pam Fogner called me this evening as they were driving north to let everyone know they found Buba tonight about 9:00 pm your time. Just near
the Skates crash site. Ronny & Pam had been looking around for an hour or so, and he decided to drive around and see what they could see. He saw a
ranch road and decided to try it. He contacted the occupant, who spoke no English. Apparently Ron sucks at Spanish himself. The only word he
reportedly could muster was, “Negro.” (the color)
The man was reluctant to offer any information until a truck driver, (where you get a truck driver from at a time like that I still don’t understand,)
interpreted the story and mentioned something of a reward. It seems the rancher seemed to remember a black, negro dog had been tied up behind his
house for a bout 3 days now and seemed to fit the description of the now recently revealed valuable missing dog. Ronny wanted to inspect the dog and
confirm it to be one and the same. Which it turned out to be. He paid the rancher a $300 reward, and collected Buba. Buba however, being a little
untrusting by this time had other thoughts. He was very aggressive, and they had to muzzle him to get him to go with them. Pam says she will tie him
tight when they stop for bathroom breaks...for the dog. They called Sheryl and plan to take him directly to her in Long beach Tomorrow.
Connie & Joel also spent a lot of time on their way up north looking for the dog in the crash area, but weren't as lucky. They also stopped by the
hospital to see her, but she had been discharged by the time they arrived. As was the case with us also.
A happy ending for this portion of a tragic situation.
Good job Ron & Pam!! Good job Punta Chivato!

I think it speaks well of the spirit of community that the two people who were headed north would stop, talk to strangers even though they did not
speak the language, and try to recover the lost dog. And then drag a scared and aggressive dog into your car to spend the next 36 hours with. It is
the kind of caring and support that makes me proud to know Ron and Pam.
