CDMA vs GSM phone service

Got a letter from Verizon today telling me that my CDMA phone would not work in the future in Mexico as Verizon's 'roaming partners' would be retiring their CDMA network and moving to GSM. I don't pay much attention to this stuff, and besides at the house we are outside coverage area. So only use the phone in town (San Jose del) and on the road where coverage exists.

Anybody know if this is happening this year? Sooner? Later? Or is Verizon just trying to get me to go for the new phone and another 2 year contract? I would just as soon keep my IPhone 4 for another year. But if it is going to become a useless brick in Mexico, well ok then I will look at taking their deal.

Or maybe just switching over to AT&T which may have better coverage down the peninsula???

Some CDMA Verizon phones take a verizon global GSM card. Ask your shop.
