Meanwhile, up in Alaska... (article)

Last summer I flew to Dutch Harbor Alaska, after a brief stay in Anchorage, to embark on a research cruise aboard the NOAA Research Vessel Pt. Sur. I was pleasantly surprised by the late-July warm weather, midnight sun and incredible landscapes visible from air (en route) and sea (heading south).

As we collected ocean water and algae and looked at the Kenai peninsula and other scenic spots, I kept thinking: what an incredible place! Whales and salmon and eagles... Just amazing.

Alas, there is trouble up north. Melting glaciers and permafrost. Hungry wildlife. Wildfires and bark beetles. No snow for the Iditarod dogsled race...

Welcome to a warmer Alaska.

"A single January snowstorm in Boston produced more snow than Anchorage has seen all winter."
