Hiway 1 vrs. Hiway 5
A lot has been said about this but here is our take:
BOLA to our home in the Sacramento area is 950 miles and takes 19.5 to 20 hours via I-5 and Hiway 1. As it is currently configured, the drive via
Mexicali is 965 miles and takes 18.5 hours. This includes the 23 miles of rock road at 1.5 hours that should only take 30 minutes when completed
making this route at least 2 hours quicker. Of course much more traffic will shunt this way so Hiway 1 should get a little quicker and hiway 5 a
little slower.
What's your guess on how much of the 1 traffic will use 5, especially trucks?

LOT'S and LOT's...
It is over a hundred miles shorter for Mexicali and Mainland bound trucks and without the dozen towns with farm traffic, and crossing the city of
Ensenada.
Too bad, but that is just the reality. That dippy road between San Felipe and Puertecitos will need a replacement soon, as it is not the same quality
as the new Gonzaga highway or north of San Felipe highway.
Planned is a highway that stays out of San Felipe and follows the old Puertecitos road, inland... which will be nice for the South Campos residents
and campers. However, how many years will that take??

I Haven't used Mex 1 the from border going south for years. Ensenada to San Quintin IS NO FUN! Would rather experience "that road" in the old days
even though my grille guard never did quite make the full trip. I am relocating in Palm Springs so it will be much easier.

Did this last summer on the return trip with Tim. I was very surprised how much faster it was. Didn't care for the rock section at all. And the heat
north of Calexico was unbearable in the summer. My a/c couldn't even keep up with it. But I will definitely use that route once the road completes to
avoid all the traffic between San Quintin and Ensenada. And the drive north of Gonzaga is beautiful.

That 23 miles of dirt/rocks, is debatable how long it should take...
There are two schools of thought of the drive:
15-20 MPH with about 8-10 lbs less tire air.
45 MPH, or more, with about 18-20 lbs of air in the tires.
My philosophy is the second one.
