Garmin "Deal"

I know that most prerunners and chase trucks use Lowrance GPSs - but for those who like Garmins for way superior displays and user friendliness, I came on a good deal today.
I was interested in upgrading the map in my StreetPilot 7200 to the new NT North America map, which incorporates the superior BiCiMapas map of Baja - don't know if Garmin bought them or is licensing their technology.
In any case, I was getting rejected by the Garmin MapUpdater. I called tech support, and was told my old GPS couldn't be upgraded to the new maps - memory, display density, my density, my old age, whatever.
The surprise was the rep could give me a 40% trade-in discount towards a new Nuvi 2789, 7" display, hi def, voice actuated, etc., much better than my old unit, for $162 - with a lifetime map upgrade program.
How often has your Dell or HP rep offered a trade-in discount on your old POS computer?
For those of you who say "Too few trackpoints, too few waypoints" for a Baja 500 or Baja 1000 - the solution is to take the SCORE course file and convert it to a clear overlay of the map = unlimited points, and works great.
Just an FYI.

Har! And I thought I was doing good to have my Garmin GPS 5 actually show Rt. 1 and Mulege on its map.

Of course it's been bolted to my handlebars for twenty years now. I suppose I've gotten my moneys worth out if it.

Thank you... at the moment I have a Tom Tom Via with Mexico included and has Baja roads and streets... Having the BiCi Mapa de Baja would be better indeed. So the Garmin model is Nuvi 2789... and that's the only one?

you know these hand held gps units are for "dinosauras"

as cell service gets better and better they are disappearing

you can load a location to your phone and it's the gps unit...its only time

While cell coverage is improving, it is nowhere near the point where those who love to 'Explore' would rely on it.

Beside that, my phone needs are met with a cheap, pre-paid GoPhone. No expensive device, contract or monthly service fees.

I like my automotive GPS, and for what it is worth, I like the TomTom better than the Garmin Nuvi that I also used on a previous Baja trip. I have never had to do all the things that Gulliver was talking about, maybe I should check Garmin out again.

Edit; It was Skippermike that was talking about new platforms, not Gulliver.

Bob,
I don't have an I-phone technology yet.....and use a simple Garmin 60 Csx for routes and tracks in the outback (not for finding the closest Starbucks).....will newer cell phones allow tracking, routing functions, etc these days?

Loading maps is something that is important for my style of GPS use.....

Cell phone!!! There's no cell towers up in the hills. Where I ride there would have to be a cell tower for each rancho and then there wouldn't be coverage between one rattlesnake and the next one.

When I'm on a road in in a town I know where I am. It's when I'm half way between nowhere and the back of nowhere is when I'd like to get a handle on things.

i see im not the only dinosaur...

I was recently with my daughter...she loaded a "route" off the internet using wifi...when we had it available

when we got lost and no cell service the gps in the phone still got us back on track

there's no need for cell service if the internet has the map data
the new phones have gps built in

technology has moved way past me

With my iphone on, even with "no service" being displayed, the gps is working.
I have a gps Mexico map from Navigon with auto rounting and other bells & whistles.
Great for the cities with all the many little streets. So, no cell service needed, much better than my ancient vehicle based units.

I agree that cell phone GPS is great for on-road navigation, but still totally lacking in off-road capability. Maybe someone knows of some off-road apps out there, but I don't. For what motoged and Gulliver (and myself) are talking about the handheld is still king and probably will be for the foreseeable future. The cell phone apps are not interested in off-road types like us.

Well, for off-road types like us, I use a cache capturing program with Google earth, and a small bluetooth gps receiver, sitting under my headlight cover. Real time gps tracking on a Google satellite image, together with any route/waypoint overlay - without an internet connection.....

Sometimes is it more relaxing to just follow the guy in front of you, and having a cold one, while others discussing the next possible turn :-)

Garmin GPS "Deal"

David,
I don't know what models may be included. I was interested because my old 7" StreetPilot can be "traded in" for a newer/better 7" model.
To all the "smart"phone charting users,
I tried my other, 4" Garmin Nuvi in my truck. Around paved city streets it was OK; we've used my wife's Samsung "smart"phone nav app, it is also OK in the city.
However, off road at any speed, the screen size/display on these are too small. That is why most pre-runners/racers have 7" to 10", or more, displays.

Kindle, anyone use one?

My needs for communication are very basic. so WIFI capable. and no contract or service agreement are part of my parameters.

Has anyone on this board used a Kindle with a GPS app in Baja? Size matters, so I would be happy to replace my 5 inch TomTom and 13 inch laptop with a tablet, but did not think a Kindle would work as a stand alone GPS.

Any suggestions would be welcome, because I don't think my eyes will get any stronger. i am also a bit of technophobe, so its gotta be simple!
