Baja Bound Insurance
Such a positive experience!
A couple of weeks ago I was in San Diego visiting with my family and bought a used car. For whatever reason, I could not get my info to go on the
Baja Bound website, so I called.
Geoff got back to me really quickly and within less than 15 minutes I had a printable copy ready!
Just wanted to mention how easy and affordable it was for those of you who may need insurance.

Well, good question. I have no idea if there is an issue or not, when you are a dual citizen.

Blanca, if the car you bought has US plates and registration, I think you pretty much need to use Bajabound, or some other broker.
Just a guess, I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of Mexican regulations.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

well, the way I see it is that no matter what, when I am in the US, obviously I am there as an American.
But I am curious anyways!

Do you also insure your car in the states? What kind of drivers license do you have? Are you also a resident of a State in the USA? All could
impact whether your insurance is valid.

the bajabound insurance was just to bring the car down - one week of insurance
the car was insured in the US and I have both Mexican and American driver's licenses being a dual national

hmmmm Geoff asked for the plate and it was clearly American plated. I gave my American drivers license. He did say that it would NOT be covered
in the US (which wasn't an issue).

Hopefully you don't find the anser by having an accident and them finding out you are a full time resident and citizen of Mexico.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this...just got back from the Baja 1000 late last night!
So the bottom line is Blanca is covered because she still has a drivers license from here in the states and the vehicle has CA plates. If she only had
a MX license and the vehicle had MX plates that would be another story.

So geoff, it does not need to be covered by US insurance either? Somewhere I seem to remember that question being asked. And you can be a full time
resident of Mexico?

if the car went SOB and it isn't coming back it doesn't need US insurance. if/when it does come back Blanca can buy weekly (or whatever) US insurance.

Hello Ralph,
The companies that we represent (ACE and HDI) do not require you to have full coverage in the U.S. in order to get a full coverage policy in Mexico.
ACE does have a surcharge added to the policy if you do not carry full coverage in the US however.
You can also be a full time resident of Mexico. We offer "Resident Use" policies for vehicles that will remain in Mexico more than 6 months out of the
year. We have many clients that live full time in Mexico that rarely cross back into the US and therefore don't carry full coverage insurance in the
US...but we are still able to insure their vehicles for full coverage in Mexico.
I can't speak to the rules that other Mexican insurance companies might have though...this is just for ACE and HDI.
