Three days in Northern Baja - need opinions
OK, nomads I would like to hear your opinions. I am traveling more and more to Mexico for work, but rarely get to Baja Norte anymore. Next week, I'll
be taking some friends to Ensenada, Tecate and Rosarito for a birthday trip for three days.
I need suggestions on taco stands, restaurants, cantinas, etc. for all three areas. I read many suggestions on here but love to hear some current info
on your faves and not-so faves.
Thanks,
Ted

El Trailero in El Sauzal has nice tacos of all varieties. Always people there. Right on the 1.
I really like Birrieria La Guadalajara in Ensenada for birria.
In Tecate, I really like Tacos Mis Tios for tacos.

Have a fun weekend Ted... If you venture further south and wear hiking boots, I will add some ideas that will take you back in time!
However, pavement next to mission sites (or very little dirt) in the northern triangle:
1830 site: EL DESCANSO (just south of the Cantamar sand dunes and just east of the toll road) mission site behind church.
1787: SAN MIGUEL (next to the school in La Misión, on the free road).
1834: GUADALUPE (one mile from Hwy. 3 on the paved road through town, turn left (where street ahead becomes divided) one block to museum/ mission
site.

Across from Traileros is an excellent restaurant with ocean view, live music and great food...even if you just order tacos, you get a nice cerammic
bowl of beans and tortilla soup too! I think the name is Vianny or something like that.
Also for a great dining experience Pampas by the cruise ship terminal is awesome.
Where I always eat is a cool spot at the end of Playa Hermosa where it turns left up to the highway...on both sides of the street there is what is
called Callejon...or alleyway...they have cool food booths in there for a nice mix..they have great steak, a real Italian place, sushi, salads, a
bar, so each can choose what style of food they want.

All three places are very good. There is also a Birrieria La Guadalajara in Valle Guadelupe. Next to the Posada Inn. There is also a good coffee
shop located in the Inn Property. Los Naranjos restaurant is nearby - another good one. Right on the main highway between San Antonio de Las Mina's
and turn into Guadalupe.

In Ensenada you can't go wrong with a sea urchin tostada with fresh almejas and avocado slices, or about 10 other types of tostadas.
Yaqui is great because its easy to get to and the perones are the bomb. Take the exit at south end of town as if you were going to Roso Beach Hotel at
the 2nd street make a right and down two blocks on the right. In and out (except for the wait to get your taco). Yaqui method. You order one taco at a
time. When you finish you walk up to the side of the line with your plate and the guy will work you in. That way the succulent juices from the
marinated tender grilled carne and the frijoles de olla wont soak the delicious flour tortilla to the point where the 2nd one you ordered with the
first it fall apart before you can finish it.
Trailero as advertised covers all the food groups since their expansion some years ago. The one and only time I had cabeza was there. Did I mention
one and only.

Mi Kaza, not far from the pier is a great breakfast place, if you are not looking for ambience. If you like ambience, Las Cazuelas has great
breakfast as well.

I loved the Perrones (sp?) super tacos there! Do they still make dog barking sounds when they chop up the carne asada? Haven't been back since they
moved.

Really? When we went there we were the only norteamericanos as it was otherwise packed with locals. That has been a good clue in trying new places...
the locals go to the good food. I have never had pizza in Mexico!

Finca Altozano
Another big fan of this restaurant. Our visit was in the fall of 2014. Grilled local products are their specialty. We shared grilled octopus,
roasted lamb and grilled quail. The quail was the best we have ever had, a dish I have a hard time passing up on. We finished the meal with a berry
tamale and home made ice cream. Exceptional setting overlooking the valley. Highly recommended.

Wow, thanks everyone for the great information. I will say I have been to El Yaqui many times and love it. Our itinerary has been somewhat set in case
you know of any other places where we will be.
Tijuana to El Vergel waterpark (gonna be hot!), then tacos somewhere. Head over free road to Rosarito and then down to Ensenada for the night
(actually outside Ensenada at the Horsepower Ranch).
Then we changed plans, instead of a quick trip to drive over to San felipe (too much heat) we'll head south towards San Quintin. Not sure if we'll
head out to Santo Tomas or somewhere father south, but will get to the coast. We'll stay and eat down there.
I know of Jardines as a place to stay but what about north of there (outside San Quintin). Anyone been to La Cueva del Pirata? Any reason to maybe
stay/eat there?
Thanks again all, look for my trip report
Ted
