San Felipe 250, Shell Island, Mysterious Geoglyphs!
WOW... Another great Baja trip!
I will post a complete story later, but wanted to tell my amigos that Elizabeth and I had a great time...
We arrived in San Felipe about midnight Friday night/ Saturday AM...
Found a place to watch the race at Checkpoint 2, Race mile 130...
Enjoyed the beach later that afternoon and had a great dinner at Chela's in Ejido Delicias, then went to Tunaeater's camp and had fun with Paul and
his friends, around the campfire...
Sunday, we went to Shell Island... Had fish tacos and shrimp c-cktail in San Felipe... Took a dirt road off Hwy. 5 and found some ancient (?) lines on
the desert hills (geoglyphs?)... One hour wait at Mexicali west to cross back (6:45-7:45pm).
I got lots of great photos... Here's one from the race...

Geoglyphs!?
In a small valley, west of Hwy. 5 between Km. 113 & 114 was several strange lines on the slopes...

When I preran the race course I had the feeling we had passed through some of the course during our Matomi trip (besides the actual Matomi part of the
course) was there some overlap of our trip and this course?.....the parts that "looked" familar seemed MUCH rougher than I remember....

Yes Jim... the same as last year: in Valle Chico, the race course came down the valley and intersected our route to Matomi canyon about race mile 159
(the Azufre Pass road, about 1 1/2 miles from its west end, along the barbed wire fence that is mostly gone)... From there to Arroyo Matomi (Race mile
168.9) the race course and our trip to Matomi was the same.
This photo is looking west, across Valle Chico... on the 'Azufre Pass' (Canada el Parral) road after it comes out of the coastal sierra. Note the
fence along the side... The race course intersected it at the low point in the valley.

David, really no idea on the marks. Bruce is out of town right now but I expect him back in a couple weeks. And of course any exploration (Diaz's
grave) always interest's me. Too bad GPS's weren't available when Henderson etal made the trips - but the search is the adventure. Look at your data
and try to get some GPS wpts (approx) from it. I'll put it on one of the Satellite things like I'm trying to do for pole line road. Send by Email
and scans of any maps you thing might help.

Thanks for the pictures and it sounds like you and Elizabeth had a great time.!! I wish I had some higher resolution satellite imagery for the area to
see if the ?Geoglyphs? would show up.

Diaz Grave Located? Not yet!
Lou, I have the original letter by Walter Henderson, sent to Choral Pepper with the best directions to the site (he called the 'rock pile'), written
in 1967. He didn't want to die with those details lost and Choral Pepper was the ultimate Baja and desert mystery fan (and publisher of Desert
Magazine)!
Arman, thanks for the kind words! On the subject of satellite images (such as those you make at http://www.satprints.com ), I can send you the approx. location of the 'rock pile', and maybe we can find a way to get in close to reduce the
hiking didtance?
Like my 'Lost Mission' search (another Choral Pepper inspired quest), I am only interested in taking photos. I have shared the details I have with two
other Diaz Grave hunters.
I suggest anyone interested in this story to go to the Nomad Historic Interests & Literature Forum and read the chapter I posted from Choral's
manuscript.
