South Dakota via various National Parks

I am on a road trip to South Dakota for a drivers license, having a swell time, and hitting as many national parks as I can. Stay tuned for a report on the process, and progress...

The CRAZY HORSE rock carving is now finished (It is a similar exhibit as the four presidents, and no, Trump is not one of them!)

Eight days, 6 National Parks or Monuments, several state parks, Monument Valley (Navajo) and too many national forests to count and we are now in Nebraska. Three to four hours to Rapid City tomorrow.
The drivers license the following day. Will post how that goes.

They have been working on that as long as I can remember.
Finished?
Crazy Horse will never be finished.
For sure, go there. But know this, the Crazy Horse will never be finished.
Not even for your grand children. Cool place to visit.

Crazy Horse is a great place to visit. They had a video showing how it all came together. Same guy that did the Presidents at Rushmore did Crazy Horse.

Crazy Horse's "face" is finished.

They are now working on his outstretched arm.

Still to go -

The rest of his head (besides his face)
His torso
And the entire horse that he is sitting on.

Maybe in 50 to 100 more years.......

Same guy made a video of both monuments?

Gutzon Borglum never saw crazy horse, the man or the mountain.

There is a secret time capsule behind the presidents head at Mt Rushmore.
They even have conspiracy theories about the time capsule.

When Buddy Red Bow wrote this song, from a diary in the time capsule, the diary of a little Indian boy who ended up in the cavalry, the guy in-charge of the Department of the interior flew out to find out what happened. He found out that this is a story that needs to be told.

Your right, it was Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who worked on Mount Rushmore under Gutzon Borglum.

South Dakota road trip report on drivers license and plates...very easy process. Fill out DL application ahead of time, your PMB office can give you the forms when you pick up a copy of your receipt (required). You will also need a receipt for a nights lodging in SD, as well as two pieces of ID, see website for acceptable forms. I had no wait at the little DMV office and was in and out with license in hand in less than five minutes. For plates and registration, the line was longer, don’t bother with form ahead of time as long as you have the original title as the clerk will do that for you. Elapsed time, less than thirty minutes. Then, enjoy your new state! Getting there was great fun!

Something we were not told ahead of time but the campground knew what we needed was the receipt must show your South Dakota address. We used my Dakota address in Madison and Teri was very helpful all the way thru.
Funny we went to get our dL and they do dmv services in the 4-H building. Just a little different than California we were there 10 mins and had our new licence in hand. My sister in law had an appointment with the dmv in cal. Waited 4 hours and is still waiting for her new licence. Her California tax dollars at work.

1 night in a campground to get a drivers licence?
Is this all about South Dakota plates for your camper van?
How long is the licence good for until it expires?

I had some good days in South Dakota way back when.
August hail storms are - severe sometimes.

If you are in SD, you have to go to Custer State Park. Hidden gem. Also the Blackhills. I found Crazy Horse a bit of a disappointment, but Rushmore and some of the backroads are great.

And, the first license renewal can also be done online. The second requires a personal appearance. Probably for an eye exam. I made the trip north in 2015 and got a new car, license and registration. The car I bought through the Costco buyers service while in Mexico and picked up at a Sioux Falls dealership. There was no sales tax on the new car, but a 4% excise tax. My stay in South Dakota was two days and I won't have to return until 2025.

Another attractive feature for expats adopting South Dakota as a home away from home is that there is no requirement that insurance be maintained on a vehicle registered there unless the vehicle is in the state. Out of sight out of mind. So for those who spend most of their time out of the country there is no need to pay for U S insurance while you are not there.
