Travel article about Loreto
I just read this article from Travel Weekly, declaring Loreto the next "It Destination" for the savvy traveler. I've always wanted to visit, but not because
of articles like this, which reads as a puff piece by someone who might not have even been to the place being written about.

I just hope it doesn't turn the fire hose on a place that wasn't on fire to begin with.

Didn't read it, however, Loreto is by far my favorite place in Baja.
For 3 reasons:
- the town, not too big, not too small, just right with lots of charm
- the islands just off-shore
- great starting destination for off-roading in Baja Sur

I really like Loreto very much. We have never spent more than a day there but it would be fun to.

Thought La Paz was queued for next It town. Loreto will never be on fire. Strange thing to write. Talks about where to stay and mentions 2
resorts outside of town. Puff piece by someone who hasn't been to Loreto.
It's cleaner than Pescadero and think it has more of a MX community feel. School kids practicing Christmas carols in the Plaza is special.
Gets windy, floods easily, great food. Sewer problem next door to La Mision Hotel.
US Marines: providing enemies of America an opportunity to die for their country since 1775.
What I say before any important decision.
F*ck it.

It's definitely on my list of places to visit, especially now that it's a bit easier to reach from the east coast.

Lencho, the mostly walking only area in the middle is so fun to stroll around in. The few times we have gone, I like to sit at an outside table and
people watch.
That being said, the smell of sewage on the malecon as you approach is disgusting. It would be a good thing to get a grip on that.
One day I would like to spend more time there.

As much as I like Loreto, the sewer smell was a real distraction. That alone will limit tourism.

The La Paz Malecón is pleasant. Now visualize what it could be like if there were no cars rumbling by spewing exhaust while you eat
and people watch.
It's illuminating to walk down there before the traffic, then return a few hours later and compare the air quality. The sea breeze helps, but most
folks are inured to what they're breathing there.
As for sewer smell, was it sewage or algae rotting on the beach? The only time I've noted sewage at the malecón, was when hurricanes overloaded the
system (AFAIK there's no separate stormwater drains and a lot of the torrential rains get funneled down the sewer and head for the lowest spot, which
appears to be the malecón sewer manholes).
Which, as a side note, is a reason to be careful of your street vendors. For a while after hurricanes, I'm leery of street tacos & such down in
the lower part of town. |
I have to disagree, my favorite memories of la paz are sitting on the sidewalk in front of Fritz's on a saturday night watching the parade of "all
kinds of vehicles"on cruise night.....of course the best view is on the sidewalk, god bless em!

Love the town of Loreto, stayed there numerous times. The smell is definitely sewage, but I only catch it just north of La Misione. It always seems
to come from near the turn away from the malecon where there is some structure in the Merle of the road.

I am sure she is talking about Loreto as the smell of sewage is strong where she says, just north of the Mission hotel. Been that way for years.
I'll let you know tomorrow, I'm flying in for a month!
