Blind Mules

Heading north across the border? Here's something to be aware of. Mexican drug smugglers are putting packages of drugs under cars with a geolocator. You unknowingly smuggle the fentanyl across, and guys in the US pick it up. You have some explaining to do if you get nabbed at the border. It will be a difficult situation, for sure.

What an ugly situation that could be! Even if the border guards don't find the stash, Narcos are tracking you!

Is it possible to scan for a tracking device without knowing it's frequency?

The Spot "Trace" GPS tracking device can be pre-programmed to send out a signal at regular intervals once the it begins to move. As far as I know, it is dormant in between intervals. Those intervals can be pre-programmed up to 60 minutes apart. The subscription service provides a nice track overlay onto a Google Earth map along with coordinates.

The other, more common, type of locating device uses mobile data. Less expensive and no subscription needed. Apple "Air Tag" is the well-known brand. It is sending out a ping to other nearby phones at frequent intervals.

I'm skeptical that a GPS-based tracker stuck under a metal car body, could possibly be effective.

Two kids in La Bocana fell for the newspaper ad, quick money for driving a car to the US and spent 18 months in a San Diego prison. The attorney quickly figured out that they were blind muled but even so, they did their time.

Watching the show "To Catch a Smuggler" it shows they just stick the package to your undercarriage with magnets

That would be quick, and easy, but I would think that a magnet would be one thing that would mess up a tracking device.

Not sure why it would? It follows satellites, not a compass;) jk

Speaker magnets don't seem to be affect radio transmissions or receptions that I know of.

Electronics are not a strong field for me. I managed to de-program the RFID chip on my season pass (skiing) by putting it in the same pocket as my cell phone. When they re-programed the chip they warned me to also keep it away from any magnets.

An RFID chip may not work when it is within a strong magnetic field but it will not be damaged by a magnetic field.
