An excellent feel good story indeed. So many grand old wooden boats meet less fortunate fates. Alaska has many. However some fall into the hands of
passionate owners to be restored and maintained in Bristol condition. I have a friend in Ketchikan who has a 38 foot Monterey built fishing boat of
similar vintage as western flyer. Not a day passes without some kind of work being done. Thanks for a great post.

I am from Northern California and Steinbeck country. His stories (Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, Tortilla Flat,The Red Pony, The Pearl,
are set in the Monterey and King City area are familiar to me. As a child my family would visit friends in Monterey and Seaside. That is how I
remember it in the 1940’s. A working town and not the tourist trap it is today.
I read The Log From The sea of Cortez while sitting on the beach at Santispac in 1994. Reading his accounts going north from Cabo I could visualize
most of what he wrote. The book was great. I may read it again.
Exercise regularly. Eat sensibly. Die anyway.

I arrived in Monterey in 1962 when it was transitioning from a working class town to mostly tourism. There were still two canneries working but the
Row had stated to develop. I was 18 and had just escaped from Northern Minnesota and thought I had found paradise.
