EVERYONE was out there helping today! Marines, Army, Volunteer Fire Depts from all surrounding communities; workers from farms and ranches -- today, EVERYONE was a fireman. And hats off to them! They pulled it off. When we saw those flames licking the sides of houses we thought "that's it" --- but it looks like all the homes survived; maybe some with a few lick marks, but all is lookin' good right now.

6:45 AM.... Calm and beautiful, at least from my perspective. Time to check the damage and see what good can be done.

I-5 closed, north and south between Oceanside and San Clemente due to one of those infamous backfires being caught up in a wind shift. No trains....no cars....no nothing can get through.

Anyone have any news about the status of the fires in the Santo Tomas Valley? Last night the forest service map showed several new fires down there, but their site is not working now.

Ejido Antonio Melendrez took the worst of that fire. 52 houses and their entire avocado grove - and some livestock.

This morning the fire near El Zorillo was still going and there were 2 more almost due east of Maneadero up in the hill/mountains. It looks, right now, as if those 2 have merged into one giant fire.

In your Baja Almanac, I would guestimate it at page 7, K1 and L1 would be the general location.

No way that is near Zorillo. Way further back, toward the sierras. An hour ago it looked like the pictures of Hiroshima. A monster mushroom cloud.

The 2 that I'm guessing merged are almost due East from Maneadero and are separate from the El Zorillo fire.

Was, and may still be. 2 nights ago Hwy 1 was closed at El Zorillo southbound and Ej. Uruapan northbound for several hours. Earlier it looked like the fires we're quite far back from the highway -- up in the mountains.

ALL PIX MONDAY evening, Oct 22...
Punta Banda peninsula, looking southeast, view just north of Santo Tomas

Sky filling with smoke, ash

View from my rooftop deck

Ridge just above trash dump, near Campo LaJolla

Have heard of heroism from firefighters, volunteers of every kind. How spoiled I am when I'm thinking of my house construction, countertop installation and what beverages I'm serving this saturday.

San Diego visit tues, 10/23 was jaw-dropping with sights of devastation.
