from the article: "As shallow fish populations have become over-exploited, the fishing industry moves further away from the coasts and deeper into the ocean every day, using nets at 2,000m depth and trawling the seabed for fish."

Now, to bring this back to gill nets and Baja, thank you DT for initiating this thread, and thanks Pompano for the supplemental photos of netting within the Bay of Conception.

Some twenty years ago Roy Malhoff (sp?) founder of Eco Mundo informed his guests about the travesty of gill netting. In the quest for shrimp smaller delicate nets are used which unfortunately traps and catches anything else. Like DTs photos shows, other sea creatures are drowned and discarded.

Roy assured us that netting was completely illegal within the Bay. However, the very next day I took a walk out to the tip of the peninsula that rises from the sandspit at Requeson only to find a gill net strung out in the water just on the other side.

If it was illegal then because of the known decimation it was causing, what now, so many years on? What of the future?
