My parents emigrated from Montreal to Buffalo, where I was born, many moons ago. I have both nationalities, since Canada and the US now recognize dual
US-Canadian citizenship.
I have spent the last 10 years of my life more or less surrounded by Mexican people and now speak Spanish more than I speak English or French. I now
live with my two dogs in south-central Baja, returning to San Diego for work responsibilities.
With this background, I now offer the following perspective:
Canada (or at least Montreal and the province of Quebec): Wonderful, humane, generous society, teeming with decent, thoughtful, fun people. Located on
an inhospitable tundra that is UNACCEPTABLY and forbiddingly cold in the winter, but humid and swarming with mosquitos in the summer. Late spring and
early autumn in Montreal are wonderful, magical. Also, in all seriousness it is a special haven of sense, compassion and prosperity in a harsh world;
it is a lovely country, a beautiful culture, but not for me.
California: Magical place, with epic and good surf from OB in San Francisco right to Tijuana Slews, and I am sure there are good spots north of the
Golden Gate Bridge, but I never surfed any of them. Amazingly open, open-minded culture. But like the weather, the people in California are sometimes
a little too cool for my liking. I spent most of my adult life in Cali -- in Santa Barbara, SF, Santa Cruz and, since 2001, in SD. Santa Cruz has the
best waves, and Santa Barbara REALLY has the best waves when it works. There are too many surfers in CA, and the water is too cold everywhere, even in
SD. SD has the most breaks and the best beach break in the world, Black's. California is a GREAT PLACE to work, open your own business, and prosper by
working very, very hard. It is a great place, and endlessly diverse, which I like.
But overall the US can be a very harsh place. It sometimes seems as though it is composed of completely distinct, essentially incompatible regions
(the Old South, the Yankee Northeast, etc.)
Southern Baja: Perfect weather for somone like me; good surf; warmer water; a better vibe in the lineup by ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE; less stress; a better
way to live....
PS: I have not proof-read this post and have had wine this evening. That is my excuse if it doesn't make sense or is offensive!

Growing up in California you seem to have overlooked that Californians, other than people who communicate with their thumbs, do not refer to their
state as "Cali". In the same way, only foreigners call San Francisco, "Frisco". If California were an independent nation, and I wish it was, only
seven countries including the USA would have a bigger economy. I consider the diminutive, as you use it, to be either unaware or purposefully
insulting. I haven't been drinking, but I was born here and have lived here for 7 decades. I'm glad that Baja Cali suits you.

Canada exists beyond Montreal.....you should get out more 
Vancouver Island offers epic surfing....
As well, there are other states beyond Soucal.....
Glad San Juanico makes you happy....just fix those silt beds north of town.....eh !
