Christopher C, upon arriving in what would later be the Dominican Republic immediately set about enslaving the native people to make them dig for gold for him and the Christians who sent him. A bold man on an evil mission.

Magellan in 1521 arrived in what would later become the Philippine Islands. He was under orders from the Catholic king of Spain to bring those people under the rule of the king and to submit to the Christian god. When the victims, who had their own culture and religion, refused to submit, Magellan set upon them with the full might of his war ships, muskets, swords, pikes, and armor. The citizens rose up with their sharpened bamboo sticks and killed Magellan for his despicable arrogance.

I thoroughly respect DK's knowledge of the portions of Baja he has explored. I would hope he would eschew any connection with Ferdinand Magellan.

It is interesting to note Magellan's conflicted mind set. While being willing to kill people for not embracing the Bible, he is also quoted as having noticed one of the most damning pieces of evidence for the invalidity of the same book.

To paraphrase..."The church tells me that the earth is flat, I believe it is round, I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I believe the shadow more than I believe the church."

Thank you for the reminder that we all too often accept the elementary school history and myths that grant hero status to such people. Adventurers and fortune seekers they were, murderers they were, and heros they were not.

David does have and shares lots of knowledge about parts of Baja But while at times he does not accept other people's opinions about parts of Baja as valid, or their experiences different than his as valid, and he loves to throw in his politics, he is certainly no Magellen---thank the gods or the people of Baja would be in real danger.

Well said, David K. . Vags comments were not appropriate in the context of this thread, in my opinion. Vag and Diana would have us look into the past acts of the "heros" that just participated in the rescue of the 33 miners in Chile, and reveal all & any dirt found while covering the wondrous happenings of last night and today---------which I believe would be totally inappropriate. Talk about confusing and ruining the coverage & celebration of 'man' at his best with negativity.

Another example of differences in people's thinking process and sensitivities--------no wonder we are polarized.

In my book the comparison of David to Magellan is a compliment, and I am positive it was meant to be that way.

Thanks again David for all you do for us.

Barry

Comparing the thoughts about the amazing rescue of 33 human lives to the murderous actions of others, is apples and oranges, and illogical conclusions------

Are you referring to Magellan at his best? Would hate to have seen what happened at his worst.

The rescue IMHO, should be celebrated, murder should not.

As I said, glad DK is not Magellan, or Baja would be in real trouble and DK would probably not be alive. Magellan's arrogance and stupidity led to his own death. In many ways, he was a victim of his times and religion.

I am sure Gyspy Jan had nothing but good in her thoughts as these myths are such a part of our thinking. But, I applaud Vag for his simple reminder.

Perhaps "illogical" in your mind, Diana, but very logical in mine. I stand by my comparison---------To me, the only important subject here is the fact that David helps us with knowledge of Baja, and that some of us really appreciate it. To bring these other negative comments into this thread is not appropriate & pointless, as I see it.

Lets drop this distracting talk, and get back to celebrating and thanking David K. for helping so many NOMADS------- at least some of us.

On the positive side, at least our bantering keeps this thread at the top of the "Today's Posts" list. (-:

(by the way, I DID learn about the negative-side of Columbus and Magellan way back in grade school in the '40's when apparently the teachers/schools did a better job here in CA)

Anyway, thanks Gypsy Jan... and I really enjoyed Mt.Goat 666's reply... very funny. At least he follows if you got nothing nice to say, shut up philosophy.

I have no problems with opinions, but at least don't have a problem with my opinions when they are posted for balance. Don't mix up facts with opinions.

Sad that today's school kids are robbed of the heroes we had... I mean we survived on it, and made our own conclusions. Maybe that's why they are re-writing history books to change those opinions into facts? They did the same thing in the Soviet Union...

Myths? Wow, really... so European explorers were all bad... That IS an opinion. I suppose the founding fathers were bad too... how about Abe Lincoln... bad?

When I researched for the new edition of my Baja California Mission Fact Pages http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions I found most of the newest published history contained errors, the best information came from the oldest books that were written less than 100 years after the mission system ended. So the newest version of history, may not be the finest... People sometimes like to change things to promote their political or world views.

Thank you again for the nice comments from most of you... I am here to help with your Baja adventures, if I can... I will provide maps, photos, history... and if you would like a personal guide, I am for hire! (I am not doing much of my own work of landscape irrigation and lighting, in this economy)!

What difference does it make when you speak Nasty Words about Past heros???

Is it because of you Twisted Views about Religion??
What will people report about you a 100 years from now?? It is just a waste of everyones time to read you "Opinion" about History.

The reference to Magellan was meant figuratively -- not to the actual person. By the way, why does anyone celebrate Columbus Day? He didn't discover squat. And, if only the Indians back in the 1700's had a immigration and border policy, they would have told the Pilgrims (an annal bunch if there ever was a bunch): shove off honkies, you don't have a right to be here -- and your papers are worthless.

But, this thread isn't about this BS -- it's about DavidK who is unlike Magellan, Columbus, or the Pilgrims.

Way to go.

I sure hope he does come south of Guerrero Negro though to get to know baja sur like Skeet says, or we could say he is 1/2 Magellan of BN or "1/4 Magellan of BN heading south of Shell beach soon!"

Shouldn't there be a test? Dk can you pronounce Santa Rosalalalalalalita?

It is Santa Rosalillita (Rosa-Lee-YEE-tah)... and that is not in Baja California Sur, even!:light:

If you actually read my trip reports or actually went to http://VivaBaja.com you would see that I have been south of the 28º latitude line, many times in my life. Now, not a ton mind you... there is plenty to keep me having fun in Baja Norte, so I don't need to drive for 2+ days to enjoy Baja, when Norte begins an hour from my front door and Shell Island or boojum trees are only 6 hours away. But as for Baja Sur:

The last time was last year: http://vivabaja.com/709

then 2 years earlier: http://vivabaja.com/707

then all the way to Cabo and around for 15 days for Christmas '01/ New Years 2002: http://vivabaja.com/baja15

and on my first honeymoon back in 1985 as far as Cabo,

and in 1974 to Cabo for my guidebook,

and in 1973 to Loreto over the old road and new road before it was finished.

and in 1966 to the tip by Jeep Wagoneer... took 2 weeks to get to Cabo then, with 800 miles of dirt, much of it ungraded desert track.

Now all you need David is to go South of Agua Verde down to Los Delores! And you can't go by Jeep, it will have to be by Panga and you will see some Beautifull Country, with very few People..

I appreciate all of your good work and effort!
