Not positive, but I don't think its the same beer... Several years ago I toured a huge Corona factory near Zacatecas, and I recall them saying that
Negra Modelo was Modelo that stayed in the fermenters for a longer period of time, alowing it to darken up- so in the sense that Modelo and Negra
Modelo are the same beers, then so are Corona and Corona Familiar. In other words, not the same at all.
EDIT:
after writing this I was curious and did some googling, and I was wrong. I remember the beer being darker and tastier than regular Corona, but
apparently it's pretty much the same amber color and a bit higher alcohol percentage, so at leasty slightly different... lo siento

It's the same beer. The only thing different is the packaging. |
It's NOT the same beer, for sure. Try it out....

Believe what you wish.. however, IT IS THE SAME EXACT BEER. The fact it tastes different to you not withstanding.
Modelo only produces two branded Corona beers. Corona extra and Corona light. When extra is packaged as a caguama it is
labeled Familiar.
Corona
The main Corona brand is Corona Extra, a 4.6% alcohol by volume pale lager. It is the top selling beer from Mexico and is one of the top five selling
beers worldwide. Available in over 150 countries, it is also Mexico's leading export brand. It was first brewed in 1925 by Cerveceria Modelo on the
tenth anniversary of the brewery. In 1926 the brewery decided to package the beer in clear glass quarter bottles. In 1997, Corona Extra became the
top-selling imported beer in the United States, surpassing Heineken.
Corona Extra is available in a variety of bottled presentations, ranging from the 250 ml (8.5 U.S. fl oz; 8.8 imp fl oz) ampolleta (labeled Coronita
and just referred as the cuartito) up to the 940 ml (31.8 U.S. fl oz; 33.1 imp fl oz) Corona Familiar (known as the Familiar or Litro or
caguama)Corona Mega is now available its is 1.2 liter bottle. A draught version also exists, as does canned Corona in some markets.
Unlike many beers, Corona is bottled in a clear bottle, increasing the opportunity for spoilage. Exposure to sunlight or light from fluorescent bulbs
such as those used in refrigerated display cases significantly damages the taste of beer, yielding a taste that is often described as "skunky". This
is the result of the essential hop oils spoiling due to UV exposure.
The second Corona brand is Corona Light, the first light beer produced by this brewer. Corona Light has 3.7% alcohol by volume, 99 calories (0.41 kJ),
per 355 ml (12.0 U.S. fl oz; 12.5 imp fl oz) bottle.

I remember as a kid at the grocery store here in the states I would laugh at the 6 packs of Corona with each bottle having a different level of beer
and each with a varying tint of yellow. Who would have thought it would later become a boutique beer. Lately, it's been a pleasant surprise to stumble
into the Corona Familiar. It's the same thing in Amsterdam. The Heineken Familiar is good in the dark bottle without the skunky taste - and much
cheaper.

to whatever corona bottle beer i have ever had whether SOB or NOB. They all taste like crap to me.
And as far as the "familiar" on the larger litre bottles - i don't know i haven't bought one. But it makes sense from a mfgrs standpoint that IF it
was a diff formula and taste, even an improved one, then it would be available in other sizes, bottles cans whatever. So - Dave's notes make sense to
me - but, if they taste diff to you - then they do.
i'll pony up and try one next time i see it.

If Corona is the #1 selling import beer, then why would they change? There must be a large peeey beer loving population in the USA (why else would
Budweiser be #1)???
I don't drink Bud or Corona because I don't like that taste... I also don't think Victoria is as bad as some say, either... it isn't my main brew of
choice (Pacifico and Dos Equis Lager Especial tie for that honor), but it is a nice change from the regulars... as is Carta Blanca, Mexicali,
Superior, etc.
As you can see, I am not into dark beers as I was when I was young... Negra Modelo and Noche Buena were big. I do have a Dos Equis Amber once in a
great while and the Tijuana Moreno is quite good, too.

When fishing in Loreto in the late 1980s and early 90s, the junk beer at the lowest cost everywhere was Corona. When you went out on a panga, they
would ask you if you wanted some cervezas and if you said yes without specifying a brand, they gave you bottled Coronas. It was cheap and that's what
you drank if you wanted to go cheap.
I haven't been a beer drinker for most of my life. Always hard stuff or red dry wines, almost never beer... until the last year and a half. Spending
more time in the Baja over the last 3 years, enduring the heat of summer, I got turned on to
BEER. There is nothing like a cold beer at 3pm on an August afternoon after a day of fishing on a panga in La Paz, nothing. That blast of 'good' has
turned my head.
After trying several brands, I have settled on Negra Modelo in La Paz. Even my wife likes it. However, I do carry an empty 6oz bottle of Pacifico in
my truck box so that I can trade it in and pay 6 pesos at my local Modelorama for a full 6oz bottle and drink it surreptitiously in the privacy of my
Tacoma. Back in So Cal, I drink Miller Draft in bottles. Looks really good and tastes good very cold and chilled in the freezer for 15 minutes.
Last week, Tuesday, was in TJ to pay property taxes and stopped in at a low light dive for a quick beer. Had Dos Equis in a bottle. It was dam
great. I understand that the most interesting man in world drinks that beer, as well.
Lastly, I have alot of respect for my very reliable local guy in La Paz who does the electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning for my house there and
he swears by Pacifico Ballena. Got to try that; so far the local guy has not been wrong about anything.
BTW, if you want to verify for yourself whether one beer is better or worse than another, dam, just buy both and taste them side by side.

Gotta agree on that, amigo...Umm....by chance did you remember to get her number?
Those 'Tecates' are certainly better than these from '61 Acapulco. Of course, at that time, we thought Tecate was sooo much better than our home
brews like Schlitz or Hamms'..
Then again, we may have been slightly influenced by ....nearby attractions.

I'm beginning to believe it's the same beer, Corona Extra and Corona Familiar, but the difference is the brown bottle.
Check out this link with responses...

Doesn't the "Familiar" on the label refer to the size, "Family Size?"
