Speaking of skunky beer, how many remember the 10 worst tasting (IMHO) from the 1950's?
1. Brew 102
2. Blatz
3.Reingold
4. Schlitz (botted with vitamin D sunshine)
5. Acme
6.National Boemian (natty boh in Baltimore)
7.Falstaff
8.Jax
9. Olympia
10. Hamms

Yeah, the first Mexican beer I had was in '69 and it was XXX in a can. Absolutely horrible; it TASTED like a can. 15 cents as I recall. We bought it from the family that lived adjacent to the dunes just south of Cantamar. They were between the dunes and the free road.

From then on, I have had trouble drinking canned beer, unless it is immediately poured. Even boating, I usually bring bottles and use a full neoprene co-zee around it.

Appears that Tecate is has begun marketing Superior again over here, at least in cans. Or, maybe it never stopped but I just noticed them on sale in Sorianas in 8 packs. I always liked Superior.

i was always a fan of beer beer, that generic beer in the generic can.

every region had its bad beers. with corporate consolidation of brewing industry, the bad regional beers became bad national and international beers. that way we can all drink the same bad beer together coast to coast and worldwide!

i do lament the passing of rainier, lucky, henry and blitz weinhard and olympia...

The bottle makes a huge difference. Any beer meister will tell you that a clear bottle is absolutely the worst thing you can do to beer. Once the light hits it...BANG, skunk beer. On top of that, Corona, at least in Mexico, ships their beer unrefrigerated. I had a discussion with a Modelo executive specifically about their packaging. He said that their consumer didn't care, that drinking Corona had become a status symbol and if they changed to a colored bottle they would drastically lose market share.

I used to sell Corona on tap...cheap. Still most preferred the bottle and lime wedge, even at more than double the price. Go figure.

BTW, Bob, if you ever try Corona on tap you'll find it tastes similar to the caguama "Familiar".

I believe that as well... so I wonder why Sol (so far) hasn't had a bad taste? I don't order it often, but Baja Angel likes it...

I've always thought that, not surprisingly, Corona Extra and Modelo Especial taste VERY similar. Both somewhat skunky, both in clear bottles. Both from the same brewer. Side by side them, sometime.

Corona's averse flavor IS the reason that people prefer it with lime, in my opinion. Corona IS better tasting with lime.

I remember drinking many Coronas in the mid 60's but never with lime, but lime was always added to that crap called Tecate.

Modelo has less of a chance to get skunky because it's a squat bottle that's top wrapped. While it's in the cardboard sleeve the light can't get to it.

SOL has so little of anything in it that there's nothing to go skunky. ;D

BTW, When my Modelo distributor was out of Corona barrels he would sell me Modelo at the same price. Which leads me to believe there is very little difference in the brewing process of Corona and Modelo. Probably just some flavor additives... Chemical tricks.

Tecate is probably the cheapest beer to manufacture. I'm told they buy the cheapest grains and hops available. Absolutely no consistency. It is crap, crap, crap. Oddly, this doesn't extend to their other beers.

From what I have learned, the lime added to the top of beer bottles in Mexico became popular years ago when it was discovered it would keep flies away from landing on the beer bottle mouthpiece.

I have experimented with this in fly infested bars in Mexico and they will not land on a lime battered beer bottle!

We had a very similar thread a year or two ago. I like most mexican beers if they are in a aluminum can or better yet a brown bottle. The pacifico Ballenas are a favorite, always bring the empty back and seem to pay very
little.
Heres some info on Skunky beer

Beer can easily acquire a skunky aroma. This undesirable, commonly encountered skunkiness is caused by a reaction in the beer that occurs when natural or artificial light is allowed to penetrate the beer container and initiate what is referred to as photolysis. This photolysis reaction breaks down the natural bitter alpha acid hop constituents in the beer, leading to the formation of the compound 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, commonly called mercaptan, that reminds one of skunks. This skunky compound can be formed rapidly when beer is exposed to light. Luckily, it is easy to prevent light-struck, skunky beer.

I like Corona, I don't usually drink it in MX but I do drink it sometimes in the US...not sure why, maybe because most people don't drink it down here (MX) but lots do in the US...I don't know.

As for bad beer from the past, my dad used to drink Reidenbach (not sure about the spelling) that he would buy from Safeway for $.99 a six pack (over 40 years ago). You had to open it with a can opener many years after pop-tops were invented. I think he drank it because he thought I wouldn't steal this pi$$ tasting swill from him....it didn't work.
