The only type of GPS device that would have helped Tom in this situation is one that is actively monitored by a satellite system, like a Lo-Jac system. Pricey, and requires a monthly fee.

The other types of GPS devices that have become popular are ones you can hide on cars but you must be able to retrieve the info off of it by accessing the device again. That's hard to do when you have no idea where your car is. This is the type that is becoming popular with parents interested in where their teens have been while driving.

Maybe Dennis...not sure, but to easy to disable.
You need something that is not obvious so they won't try to disable it. There should be something that turns on to transmit, when you turn off the key...GPS satellites do not receive...cell can transmit...maybe on-star is a hidden cell...hell what is another fee when I pay so much for insurance now. Bet there is a insurance discount maybe.
I should have read the whole post before jumping in:!:

This is one of a few systems available. You will have to research for coverage in baja etc but yhe technology has been out for years just not commercialy available until recently. http://earthtrak.com/
THe ones in the USA may be used in conjuntion with land based cellphone nets. I think that the ones in Mexico make use of the same satillites that are used by the major sat cell phone
providers, just like your sat radio, fairly good coverage thruout Baja
Do a web search and see whats out there.

Kill switches are good to keep the amatuers at bay. If they really want your rig they will just tow it. Cut off the fuel pump power. Coils used to be the easy way on older cars,
but too well known and easy to get to. It is kind of an inconvience, but on older ignitions on cars that are to be left
alone for a few hours , the removal of the
rotor was a good stop. With luck, the rotor is not easily available at the parts store and hopefully, if that is the case, you don't loose the one you removed when its time to go!

I think PepBoys should design an owner-operated RC car bomb, good for fifty miles.

Sorry to hear about your problems with theft.

I'm not sure if this will help you find you old rig; but, its worth a look since I think most cars sold here are in Northern Mexico/Baja.

Dennis,
Check out this website: www.stickdeath.com/2004auto.html

There are other car theft years to check out as well. 2007 is in the works.

WARNING: This site will show car thief stick people being killed. Don't go there if you are offended by such. (there's other offensive stuff there too, so can't say I didn't warn you)

P<*)))><
ps. i need to get out of Texas and back to Baja so I won't have so much computer time on my hands...Edit for Tom, sorry about your break ins and the loss of your vehicle.

:lol::lol: Thats funny DK. Whatever you think of me on the internet, one day the shoe could be on the other foot, and don't think myself, or any number of other Amigos wouldn't do what ever they could to help you out. Lets keep everything in perspective. There is zillions of those Viva Baja stickers around. I may be the only one with a Baja.net one.

Tom, I was trying to be sincere, you left out the first line I typed: "Bummer Tom... Sorry the low life scum found and took your rig!"

Ok, so you've got one of these and your vehicle is stolen and you go on the internet and it's in Mexico. Now what? You attempt to retrieve it by:

1-convincing local police to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

2-paying local police to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

3-paying members of an El Salvadoran gang to conduct a raid on the gang's chop-shop

4-kissing the investment and the monthly fees goodbye and buying another car.

These devices only work where law enforcement works.

Sounds like pizza insurance didn't work in this case.........

Find it and go get it. Or even better:

Hire a recovery specialist. ;D
