Last year I bought Inflatable PFDs and really like them because they are comfortable and we actually wear them. I still keep larger conventional PFDs onboard in case we think we will need them.

On the water, hand helds can communicate over great distances. Several times I've talked on a HH from San Felipe to Puerto Penasco.

One thing I would suggest is to determine how your boat behaves a-hull. I'm always concerned about how the weight of an dead outboard affects balance. Facing big seas and swamping I might even consider kicking it off.

And...how about oars?
