The official line is that the guy died from complications of a pre-existing condition, not the swine flu. Of course, if we're talking about conspiracy theories . . . .

For now on just about anything that happens internationally like this will be spun with many "Alerts", "Warnings", "Scare".... and then Obama du Mama will come on say his thing, and then give his commercial on why we need bigger government and more of YOUR money to fight such things as this terrible Flu from MEXICO CITY!! On Avg. more that 20,000 people die in the US alone from the flu----hurry people, find your bubble wrap!

Actually, the number is more than 36,000. But give the politics a rest.

Maybe so. Safer from swine flu but more dangerous from the local swine.

Yeah. mind you, some of it is imported.............

Hmmmm. A political troll in Ensenada? I thought this thread was about the Swine flu breakout. Why the Obama reference? It is really difficult to not take the bait. They start it. Come on. Cut the crap. Don't let them do this. :?:

Actually, from my experience getting fresh vs. spoiled food has less to do with big city vs. little city or location in Mexico. It has more to do with how popular the restaurant is and how often the dish you ordered is sold at that restaurant. (A good hint is eat 2-3pm when the locals do.. and look/eat only at busy places)

Larger city restaurants are more likely to have such things as refrigeration and workers trained in basic food saftey.

Little or towns on the coast have fresh seafood; and, it is best fresh... but even in the days of the Aztecs fresh fish was run on the backs of runners from the coast all the way to Mexico city packed in glacial ice so Montezuma could have fresh fish.

I've been to many small restaurants in Mexico where someone will actually run to the mercado and purchase the ingredients for the meal I just ordered. It's really a crapshoot.. but, if you eat at the place the locals like(and keep coming back too).. you really can't go too wrong wherever you are. Some of the worst food I have ever had is in "tourist" resturants which are devoid of locals.. because they know better. Go a block or two from the beach/main plaza and eat where the businesspeople/locals eat.

The masks don't do a thing. How silly. You need to keep washing your hands and consciously control the urge to touch your nose or your eyes. Obviously, wearing a mask won't help if you scatch your eye with a dirty finger.

Great health lesson. Actually the masks do help because with the swine flu, according to the CDC and WHO, they slow down or stop the germ spreading due to coughing and sneezing. So they do have some effect.

So we are talking about two different ways to get contaminated; hand to nose, eye or mouth; airborne by coughing and sneezing. We are learning the specifics of this particular virus, which may be different from others.

They are probably making it up as they go along, but better to err on the side of caution...but without succumbing to all the media frenzy.

News frenzy happening now, Tony.

Fox News & then CNN:

LA Coroner's office just reported that the previously reported 2 swine flu deaths in Los Angeles county are NOT related to swine flu.

White House briefing now underway from press sect. Robert Gibbs on swine flu outbreak precautionary measures.

We are headed north very soon and will take all possible precautions.

We cancelled my wifes plane tickets for the begining of May and while on the phone with the airlines they indicated that the number of cancellations are much higher than they expected. For some it may be hysteria, for us it is much more important than that and we can not take the devil may care approach and fly due to respiritory problems that we are fighting anyway.

Society has certainly changed. Mostly due to the incredible expansion of communications, coupled with the 24 hour news cycle. So many folk are basically in constant contact with sources, what with Twitter, and the general phone culture. Don't want to sound cynical here, but there's little reason for pols to not attempt to take advantage of such events. They all want to look like heroes and get re-elected. Who knows where this swine flu thing is going? Right now, seems like half the "experts" are saying it could be catastrophic, while the other half are saying it has already peaked. Y'all should keep in mind that wherever it heads, when you hear or read reports, they are lagging well behind the curve. Face it, probably many folks got the flu before there were enough of them that actually sought medical help. And how many sick people did it take for a healthcare professional to decide that there may be something going on? Then, the need to test culture. I was actually surprised and saddened by learning that Mexico did not have the equipment at their disposal to "type" the strain. They had to ship sample to Canada.
All in all, what I'm getting at here is that for better or hopefully not worse, this thing has already progressed way beyond what we are hearing in the media. Maybe, it's petering out.
