YES, it has another name... the hint was refering to the OTHER name for that island: EL MUERTO (the dead man).

Thanks Chuck!

Yes, the running of the bulls in Tecate... was an annual event, for a couple years... Called the STOMPLANADA... after Spain's POMPLANADA (spelling??)

Thank you for the location to add to Bob's observation of what the photo showed!;D

Hi David,

Chris and i actually drove to Alphonsinas from our Beach House last Wednesday and stayed the night so we were looking directly at all the islands... Chris said it looked like an alligator from Puertocitis, I could see that...

The crews are still working on the bridges, but have crews as far as Huerfanito.

Daytime temps only 90 degrees, water 82 in Gonzaga. Beer: Cold

I'm not going to say it's smoother, but re-aligned in many spots, still has grades and is still rough. The contsruction is amazing... Typical gravel washboard beyond Huerfanito with fair side road. Took us 4 hours in the ole' Toyota from Playa Hermosa but went easy as we had the Rottys with us.

$55 for Alfonsinas, slept like babys, only ones in the hotel that night. Lots of Coyotes in camp, but they were quiet. Our dogs slept in the truck bed outside our room, they were very good overnight.

David, isn't the more northern Isla Encantada also known as El Muerto and not Isla Miramar? I saw that on google earth today as I was taking a trip to Punta Final from our beach house.

As with so many places in Baja, there are several names and maps that make mistakes! The word 'El Muerto' means 'The Dead One' or 'Dead Man' since the island looks like a man on his back. Here are some maps of the islands:

From north to south, on the 1962 map (with the Almanac/ topo map's names if different):

El Huerfanito, El Muerto (Miramar), Coloradito (Lobos, Salvatierra), El Cholludo (Encantada), La Encantada (San Luis)

1970 Map

1975 Map

AAA Map north to south: El Huerfanito, El Muerto, Lobos, (Encantada/ Salvatierra shown, but not named), San Luis:
