Quote: It's welfare from the federal government for qualifying folks who don't have a pot to pee in nor have developed a Social Security fund through
working. It isn't just given to the lazy...it's for the sick or disabled and those of Social Security age.
Dennis, it's not welfare. It is in addition to your (small) Canada Pension from working, and the Old Age Security. We have worked all our lives but
never set up a registered pension plan because we preferred to travel instead of hoarding money and watching the NYSX. Now we will retire and relax,
watch our pennies and worry about Big Brother.

Well.... since somebody has to pay for it, it's indeed welfare, no matter what spin you put on it.

My reference was to US SSI. That's welfare.
US Social Security wasn't meant to be a pension plan either. Funny how things work out.

not peculiar to Canadians. there are many people that don't ever save for their retirement. Some even blame it on the government...but then later
want the government to bail them out. Look at some of the people on this forum that don't have a pot to p in. Live day to day. don't own their
houses. never save. complain there is no work....where will they be when the "golden" years hit? looking for "theirs" while living in Mexico?

If they can't afford to live in the states, they probably can't afford to live here.
Someone should publish a guide, "Culverts Of North America."
They already have one for hospitable WalMart parking lots.

This string is turning ugly. We have been having fun with Canadians; much of
it with light hearted humor. I doesn't have to go down the political road.

I don't see much politics being discussed here, Tony. Now that we know that GIS is a government program, the conversation has drifted to government
issues.
The thread was about government right from the git-go.
We can still have fun with Canadians.....those cute little things. In Borneo, we just take them, especially the Canadian missionaries, and throw them
in a big pot, cookem and eatem all up.
YUMMY....Nothing better than a well done Canadian and a bottle of good Borneo beer.

Like it or not, Social Security was/ is the law of the land. Seems to me that the fact that anyone who paid into it should be able to make a
withdrawal. After all, it's your money. You and your employer paid into the trust.
As Dennis noted, it would appear that the Canadian program that was referred to at the beginning of this thread is in some ways similar to the "extra"
social security programs that are designed to help the poor.
Not wanting to get into a debate about such programs, just wanted to note that both Canada and the US do have programs designed to help the helpless.
Isn't IMSS, and others among the same types of programs? Seems to me thatany enlightend government would want to protect their impoverished from dying
in the streets.

If you are out of Canada for more than 6 months your GIS will end. Other wise the amount you receive is adjusted each year according to your income
tax return.

That should give you a new "tangent" to amuse yourselves with.
Seriously, I enjoy this forum because you guys are so funny. Every topic is a box of chocolates!
GIS = Guaranteed Income Supplement. It's offered to Canadians who don't have big bank accounts.
But I need to know how the government determines if you don't go back to Canada every year? The GIS is actually
for Canadians living in Canada and I suppose, spending their allowance in Canada.
Anybody know? |
I'm just itching to know, although I don't have a cootie in this query.
