Scary moments!!

This is budding season at our big commercial nursery. Our pairs of budder/tiers crawl down the rows and bud selected varieties onto the peach rooted stock.
A good team can do several thousand per day, we bud over a million each season.
So, what does this have to do with rattlers??
Well, so far this season our brave budding folk have come up close and personal with two rattlers, each season the average is three encounters.
And folks, I am talking close, like inches in front of you there they are. No bites as yet, but plenty of heart stoppage, I can assure you.
All our crew is Hispanic, we have some very pale faces at moments.

By the way, read Skeet's recipe.
They say snake tastes like chicken.
So, I say cook the snake, then toss it in the dumper and go get some chicken....

Honestly, Skeet-- how many have you really eaten? I've tried a couple, and decided I'd have to be pretty hungry to actually seek one out for food: all those tiny bones...

Maybe I need to find fatter snakes.

Depends upon how it's cooked. As with fish, if you cook it too long, the bones will dislodge; just right and the meat will flake off. Reminds me of frog.

Rattlesnake does taste good. I used to work at the Hole in the Wall in Phoenix and we served it deep fried with the skeleton as a garnish. It was a big hit with the tourists, and pretty tasty too :)

HOLA< I used to see a lot of them..not much the past couple winter's and yes they can be rattleless and The smaller ones are the most danger...remeber that they can not hear..but sense ground vibs,,so walk HEAVY !! and they are more scared of you..than you should be scared of them...How would you feel if you were this lil 3 ft snake and a 190lb thing,,towering tall walked near you ?? sh-t I'd be scared,,sorta and if biten, I suggest do what the nat geo recommend's and not cut/hack at the bite ,but take the spark from any avaible motor ign wire to/at the bite a zapp it !!yep that's has been the best/most reconized treatment the world over for a few years now and most folk's do not know it..but you might induce heart flutter..YEEK !!

As a youngster living about 6 miles South of Sweetwater Texas there was daily contact with Rattlers.

In the Town of Sweetwater Rattlesnake was served at several of the Restruants. Also you can get it Canned from two or three different places.

Just be carefull when handling them. Always have a Snakebit kit in your pocket. Especially around the Rim above Agua Verde and Tambechi.

If some of you in the Baja Area would like a new Experience, Try skinning them, tanning the skins and selling them to a place in Farmers Branch Texas for around $10 a Foot,

I remember hiking up the south fork of the Kern river years ago and coming across an open tackle box, about 5 miles off the highway. Sure enough, in addition to a lot of trout lures, it contained a used snake bite kit and an automotive coil ignition wire.

Backpacker Magazine this month has two pages on the topic of post-bite action.

They have only four steps you should do:

1. Remove all jewelry, etc that will be in areas that will swell
2. Wash the wound. THAT'S ALL!!!!!!
3. Keep wound at heart level
4. Get to a hospital ASAP

I would add a # 5- put away the bite kit, the coil wire, and the sharpened blade. You will just complicate matters...

Be very careful!

Remember that many times you will not be close to your Vehicle.

Care a razor in you Snakebit kit incase you have to cut a small around where the Fangs went in and then Suck ou the Posion out with your Mouth or the Suction Cup if you have the right Kit.

"Care a razor in you Snakebite kit" and the world is flat.

From Wikipedia:

Outmoded
Old style snake bite kit that should not be used. The following treatments have all been recommended at one time or another, but are now considered to be ineffective or outright dangerous. Many cases in which such treatments appear to work are in fact the result of dry bites.

Application of a tourniquet to the bitten limb is generally not recommended. There is no convincing evidence that it is an effective first aid tool as ordinarily applied.[39] Tourniquets have been found to be completely ineffective in the treatment of Crotalus durissus bites,[40] but some positive results have been seen with properly applied tourniquets for cobra venom in the Philippines.[41] Uninformed tourniquet use is dangerous, since reducing or cutting off circulation can lead to gangrene, which can be fatal.[39] The use of a compression bandage is generally as effective, and much safer.
Cutting open the bitten area, an action often taken prior to suction, is not recommended since it causes further damage and increases the risk of infection.
Sucking out venom, either by mouth or with a pump, does not work and may harm the affected area directly.[42] Suction started after 3 minutes removes a clinically insignificant quantity—less than one thousandth of the venom injected—as shown in a human study.[43] In a study with pigs, suction not only caused no improvement but led to necrosis in the suctioned area.[44] Suctioning by mouth presents a risk of further poisoning through the mouth's mucous tissues.[45] The well-meaning family member or friend may also release bacteria into the victim's wound, leading to infection.
Immersion in warm water or sour milk, followed by the application of snake-stones (also known as la Pierre Noire), which are believed to draw off the poison in much the way a sponge soaks up water.
Application of potassium permanganate.
Use of electroshock therapy. Although still advocated by some, animal testing has shown this treatment to be useless and potentially dangerous.[46][47][48][49]
In extreme cases, where the victims were in remote areas, all of these misguided attempts at treatment have resulted in injuries far worse than an otherwise mild to moderate snakebite. In worst case scenarios, thoroughly constricting tourniquets have been applied to bitten limbs, completely shutting off blood flow to the area. By the time the victims finally reached appropriate medical facilities their limbs had to be amputated.
