Punta Baja is the Northern-most spot I'd camp at these days, (With 4-casas off the list due to it's current gross factor). I've camped there twice in the last three years. Last time I was solo and stayed in front of the two story house (he may have rooms for rent, I think) with another gringo/truck camper who also happened to be there. The trip before that I was with my brother and a friend and we camped just up the point by the unused concrete boat ramp. I'm pretty sure I remember it being fenced off as of May 2015. I/we felt that staying in town, seeing women and children helped with the risk. There's a neat little spot just south of town at the base of the point. You can see it from the houses, but need to access it via a spider track before the last hill into the village The track is sandy and part of a wash, doable in 2wd unless it rains. It's visible on google earth. I'd post pictures, but they all violate the unwritten landscape/water-sport rules. We were in sight of our camp at all times and felt resonably sure it wouldn't be pilfered.

If you are not comfortable going there, don't go! This area is quite nice and most of you have never been there.

Most people are good and nice...
There are a tiny amount of bad and un-nice people, and they are everywhere.
So, you must do what you are comfortable doing no matter what the Internet suggests. We can only tell you what we have experienced camping where we have felt comfortable.

I camp at Punta Baja all the time, in the area just south of the point that others have mentioned. It's one of my regular stopover points where I spend the night on longer trips and I'm there maybe 5-6 times a year.

I camp there alone and it's perfectly safe. There's an old hermit who lives about a mile south of the point and he walks past daily without saying a word, but he's harmless. During the summer there are often other campers scattered about the point.

Someone mentioned an incident in the area in this thread, but the fact that it was over 10 years ago shows how safe this area really is. US campgrounds and trailheads have much more thievery.

Here's where I camp, there's easy access to the beach and often some little waves and good surf fishing to boot:
