On the radio this morning there was a man who works in the medical field. He said that there is a lot of hype about the Swine flu. While you don't want to take it lightly you should not panic. Do those things that you usually do to stay healthy...wash your hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes etc. By the way he mentioned that about 36,000 people die each year in the U.S. from the flu. Also, the Swine Flu is much less contagious than when the Avian Flu was going around. Everyone just take care and wash those hands!

I am astounded at the response to this...the entire country is in a panic...I guess the gratifying thing is that if it really were a serious pandemic...well...its being dealt with in a quick and efficient manner...maybe a good dry run for some future weird disease or emergency. But man...there sure are alot of economic repricussions of this. Poor restaurant people are hit hard, businesses as everyone is staying home...sheesh.

How about the Mothers' Day Bash being held in the fall so I can be there? It has got to be the most amazing, fun party I've ever been to. Hopefully, everyone is saving their money and trips for the future so that after this hiatis everything will be really good for businessesthere.

I decided that I should check my facts on the flu instead of just trusting what I heard on the radio. I got the following from the CDC website.

How many people get sick or die from the flu every year?

Each flu season is unique, but it is estimated that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu.

Perhaps if you are currently living in Mexico you should stay there...there are plenty of flu cases here in the US.

I was just reading about the 36000 deaths. It's 90% old people with underlying heath issues. The flu just pushes them over the edge.
The reason that they are so concerned about this flu is that the people who have died are healthy prime of life aged people.
People with a healthy immume system are most vulnerable because the immune system will overeact and kill them.
So I wouldn't worry about the 36000 weak old people. I'd be more concerned about why it's killing healthy young people.

Note: I'm not saying anything bad about old people. Just that the swine flu is dangerous to young healthy people.

The media should have called it the turtle flu. Maybe could have saved a few turtles.

The deaths of healthy flu patients you describe was reportedly the same scenario as the 1918-1919 Spanish flu - but on a mammoth scale. Google "1918-1919 Spanish influenza," and you'll get some grim death counts. I don't think the swine flu is as powerful though, but it could conceivably mutate into something worse.

Ya, I read about that too. Could mutate and fizzle out or could mutate and kill us all.
I think that is why there is such a big official reaction.

Mexico City has banned restaurants and cafes from serving all food except takeaways in a bid to help prevent the spread of the deadly swine flu virus.

Empty streets of La Paz

We live in La Paz. I am in SFO on a business trip this week and back on Saturday. My wife told me that the streets, Malecon and most restaurants are empty. Farmacias are sold out of masks and most folks out shopping are wearing them. Heck even the restaurant workers are wearing them (nice way to attract biz!) Anyway as I am flying Volaris back from TJ I will have to look like a goofball and wear a mask, take airport and a 3 oz bottle of hand sanitizer (what a sissy)

And just what would any of you have done before there was an internet, blogs and forums? The instant and constant communication thing is not always a good thing. Leads to misinformation, and overwrought people. Face it. Even the links posted here are generally to places that didn't exist 15 years ago. Just maybe we are too well connected. Not saying that there's not a need to know what is going on. But with 24 hour cable really there to sell products, they scheme to to develop stories to fill air time. Recycled stuff. Partial truths. Hey. If you've got the flu, I feel for you. However, given today's nutrition, sanitary standards, and medical acumen, I don't see a repeat of the black plague. Just my opinion.

I am guessing that as summer approaches, "Yellowtail Fever" will trump "Swine Flu" every time. And using "Trump" and "Swine" in the same sentence may not be that much of a stretch...

Besides, how can you properly scream at a large Yellowtail that cut you off on the rocks with a mask on???

(sorry, I know it is serious...just sounds a bit over hyped....THIS time)

I"ve been thinking...imagine if mexico didnt take drastic measures (that most of you think is ridiculous) and this flu spread faster and more widespread. I'm sure there would have been lots of snide comments about how irresponsible the mexican government is.
I'm feeling good that this thing has been nipped in the bud, we hope, and proud that people took it seriously...which probably saved many lives.
We northerners take a real "devil may care" attitude...as I mentioned before....this might be a good dry run for a more serious threat in the future. Quick effective response is what is needed in this scenario.

As summer approaches, this current bout is expected to fizzle. I doubt whether much more can be done to prevent it, as it has already broken out.

The real potential danger is what form it may return in. The fall could see it mutate into something worse.

Maybe this is a good wake up call so that the WHO can be more prepared. Wow! The media can really whip up a panic, can't it? I don't think any of us have anything to worry about for the time being. Stay tuned.:o

Its first ever Cinco de Mayo festival. Scheduled for the 1st through the 3rd.

When I pointed out that Cinco de Mayo is the 5th of May I was told that everyone goes home on Sunday. My next question was, "How would you know?"

May 1st-3rd was close enough to the 5th for Rosartio Beach. Last year they held "carnival" the week after the rest of the world. I suppose decorataions, carnival rides and music talent are less that way.

It's not like anyone was going to show up anyhow, this place is a virtual ghost town. Even the locals are now saying "these are the hard times".
