I take the same precautions in the States as I do in Baja. In the states, I carry a Glock 23, .40 caliber. In Baja, I improvise.

I am not paranoid, I am prepared.

My first line of defense is an air horn. I've told all of my neighbors if the horn goes off to come check it out. I've also conditioned (antaganized) sp
my local dog pack (8 dogs) to seek out the sound which gets them in a frenzy. I also have a few next lines of defense at my close disposal.

I would never shoot anyone in my yard unless they were armed and pointing the firearm at me in my house. Just be careful about that too because they could be police officers in civilian clothing in "Hot Pursuit of a fugitive bad guy.

I have read this happen here in yuma, some one comes into your house at night,, good bye

The part about shooting anybody who enters your house, uninvited, IS the law in many states. "A man's home is his castle," is the quote I believe at least one Court has used in upholding such a law. However, I believe that not all states have this law; I believe some have the same law as Baja apparently does (per El Investigator).

As for the yard: I believe the law requires you to attempt to withdraw into your house before using a weapon on an intruder, at least in CA.

I agree with that

all you tough guys: if you kill someone who is not a threat to you, you have commited murder. you may not be be prosecuted, but you will go to h3ll.
while today you thrust out your chest and boast how you will murder any intruder, you got no idea what the consequences are.
if you had half a brain you would threaten the intruder to scare them away, and then go back to bed.

people who shoot at shadows in the dark usually are shooting at their neighbors or family.
there is a reason that fools should not be allowed to own guns.

I know how to solve this problem.. we need a check list form which you commit to memory, plus you must call the police before you shoot... and check with them before you respond.. they might suggest an alternate means.. you know.. moderate threat... just has a small knife.. you use a length of rope with a knot in it... larger knife.. num chucks.. you get the idea..

Sort of a the same kind of controls our troops operate under over there in Afghanistan and a few other places.. "rules of engagement"

Hell, everyone should be able to agree to that one... as our troops operate under those rules with folks shooting various types of weapons at them... and they must call and ask if they can respond.. with force of course... what else .. marshmallows...

There... now you should feel safe.. just call the police and ask them what you should do.. I'm sure that will take care of the situation...

I spent over 10 sailing around the world on private sailing boats, the best solution that we could come up with for keeping local indigenous people from coming aboard in the wee hours of the night to "borrow stuff" was the humble "Thum Tack". If spread in the appropriate area in the up right position it can catch any bare foot person unaware. It was very effictive. In the morning you simply use a magnet to pick them up. Over the years we heard many a screaming man jump over board and swim of into the night.;)

Shooting Intruders

While it's generally true that the presumption is always on your side (in the U.S.) when there's an intruder IN your house, worth considering is the advice I heard given by a self-defense author once on Roger Hedgec-ck's show in San Diego.

"Always fire three shots. The first two center-mass and the third into the ceiling. When the police ask if you tried to warn the intruder, say yes and point to the hole in the ceiling".

I liked the advice given to me by a Rosarito Beach cop years ago. It went something like this:

Keep an unregistered gun in the house but don't tell anybody you have it. Only use it if you feel really threatened; for example an intruder entering your home. Shoot to kill, not to wound. After you are sure he is dead by firing a couple of shots close range into his body, fire a couple more shots around the room and drop the gun near the body. Call the cops and tell them the intruder was armed, you fought for control of the gun and he ended up dead.

Stay firm when questioned, never change your story even if pressured and you will come out fine.

Always sounded like pretty good advice to me...

Another add on... security camera.. especially on the outside..

Affords one the ability to see the outside area, without opening the door..

Can be wireless or wired.. and one can have it set up to to detect motion, and will start recording.. onto either a HD or to a SD card... giving a record of who, what, how and all the rest.. with a digital record of the individual and/or individuals you have a pretty good record of events..

They have the ability to send and receive audio, so you can use for entry... rather than open a door.. for Ladies living out a ways from things.. it may give that little extra bit of security which makes one "feel" a little bit better.. as you would not have to open the door to ask or answer questions

Plus they can be "logged" onto from anywhere in the world by a web browser ... to "see" what is going on at the homestead.. and they will send you an email if detection of movement is signaled..

Just another tool, which may be of use, in the Baja to protect you and your property..

http://wessongroup.viewnetcam.com/CgiStart?page=Single&L...

Check it out.. this is from the upper patio looking out toward the ocean .. the tub thing is our fire ring for fires at night..

Some browsers will ask for your email.. disregard and enter the user ID, then the password..

Have set a 5 min limit for viewing..

The smudges are actually scratches, I dropped it when setting it on the rail and scratched the clear dome cover over the internal lens.. sorry, but think you can get the idea

http://www.filexoom.com/showfile-21227/shotgun2.wav

As promised here is the sound of a shotgun chambering a shotgun round.

To get it just click on the link and wait 60 seconds (Commercial break time) then download it on your computer. :o

EDIT: To say thank you to that unnamed Nomad who lead me in the right direction to Get-R-Done. You know who you are. Thanks!
